This environment is incredibly hostile to a creature such as myself (there are fluorescent lights)
How it feels to be so light sensitive that you need to sleep with an eye mask, closed blinds, all lights off and face under the covers.
Christmas season is coming so let me remind you to be mindful of people with epilepsy this Christmas.
Strobing lights on trees and other decorations are triggering and can be dangerous to people sensitive to light!
And if you feel like doing some activism you can ask your university or your local government to use static lights for Christmas decorations.
Normalize minding our own business.
I'm wearing sunglasses indoors because I have light sensitivities due to disability. I am very much visibly disabled as I use a wheelchair. I'm not wearing sunglasses as an affront to you. I'm not being rude. I'm disabled.
Climb out of my ass crack, dude!

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Did you ever think to yourself, "I wish AO3 looked as pretty as Ellipsus, with the same themes to choose from?" Well, now you can! I've created a series of site skins based on Ellipsus themes. Just follow the instructions and copy the code! ULTRA DARK LOW CONTRAST A dark mode theme that's described by @ellipsus-writes as "an ink-black backdrop for your work".
I've adapted the original Ultra Dark theme to be as low contrast as possible, to accommodate people with extreme light sensitivity.
However, please be aware that some features of the original AO3 skin are hard-coded and will still be in high contrast, and that I'm not able to test every feature of the AO3 site because I'm only one person.
So if you have light sensitivity, please be advised that you might still come across some painful-to-look-at pages.
It's genuinely kind of upsetting how quickly social media's keep shooting themselves in the foot to just have something to show to higher ups and making their sites more and more user unfriendly. It reminds me of the Oreo CEO skit from College Humor/Dropout TV.
The new Discord update for mobile is genuinely disheartening by how little they seem to care about people hating the new layout. Which honestly, the DMs now being at the bottom and no longer swipping to see server members is annoying. But as someone who very easily gets god awful headaches from heavy contrast and light, the new "default" themes are... very unfriendly to people like me. Let me show you the difference in old Discord's dark mode vs the new:
Like, holy shit, it's Bad. The new one on the right is barely usable for me, it was giving me strain after only an hour or two of use. And it's not even their darkest mode, which is pure black, but it's their only other option aside from pure white in Light Mode.
If you don't want eyestrain, you'll have to pay the 10$ a month nitro not to get migraines. I have the 3$ version, and I can not change the theme with it to their other options. I was able to fix it by fighting all of my settings for an hour to get it back to the original color palette, but jfc. I shouldn't have to reset all my phone setting, open and relaunch discord, and pray that it decides the "automatic setting" is the non-eyeball burning classic dark mode.
The world and social media is just slowly getting more and more unuser friendly, especially towards people with light sensitivity (I can rant for hours about car headlight luminosity regulations). Just kinda disheartening to see Discord so adamantly against changing any of the new UI stuff, especially is they decide to no longer have the class color palette accessible in the future :/
Things I use to make my screens darker:
Android:
"Extradunkel" ≈ extra dark. in the settings. You can make the extra dark even darker in the settings and have a shortcut for it
"Nachtlicht" ≈ night light. Also in the settings. It can make your screen more orange and a bit darker
"Night screen". App that can make your screen even darker and you can regulate the level of dark. You can also make it more orange. However, sometimes you have to stop the app to interact with stuff on the screen or it gets turned off automatically (for example when using online banking and many Google apps sometimes don't work with it). You can use it for most stuff though and it's a life saver.
"Farbkorrektur" ≈ colour correction. You can make your phone black and white or something else if you can't handle colour
you can use all of these at once!
Apple:
"Weißpunkt reduzieren" ≈ reduce white point. Makes the white on your screen less bright.
Higher contrast with dark mode makes the black darker (I only use that on my Mac so I can't speak for iPad)
The zoom window. This one is really stupid but actually makes your screen darker so it's also very helpful. Okay, you go to the accessibility menu in the settings. You turn on the zoom. It's gonna be a small window. You turn zoom area to full screen and zoom filter to "dunkle Umgebung" ≈ dark surroundings. Also, you enable zoom controller (it will be some orange circle with arrows) and if you click on that you can put the zoom to 0%. And that's it already... (Mac doesn't have that as far as I know)
You can also combine all of these.
Does anyone know any more methods that I haven't found yet?
