Liferoot
A swamp-dwelling root that filters impurities from both water and blood.
Colloquial Names: Lifebringer, Swamp Holy Water (referring to the pools surrounding it or the collected liquid)
Physical Description: Liferoot is a rather unremarkable looking herb with remarkable restorative properties. It is a yellowish brown, and softer to the touch than one would expect of a root. It’s characteristic yellow-green leaves are similar to those of peacebloom. They are triangular in shape, and edged by small, rounded tooths that increase in size down the leaf. The leaves also contain two holes, one smaller than the other. These are thought to help oxygenate the plant. Liferoot is found in marsh-like environments, such as the Swamp of Sorrows and the waters of Duskwallow Marsh, as well as along the rivers of Feralas. The root desailentates, or removes salt from, incoming ocean water, as well as removes any impurities from standing water. This renders waters surrounding the root safe to drink. In a fetid swamp environment, this quite literally brings life to those who traverse and inhabit the area.
Described Usage: Liferoot on its own is useful for fluid retention and to stave off dehydration. The root collects saline in surrounding waters, and is usually rather salty and earthy tasting. The water stored within it is used for both this purpose and to stave of dark magick, sprinkled around the doorways and windows of swamp homes to protect against spirits entering. It requires nothing added when crushed, producing a sizable amount of liquid on its own. Any part of the plant remaining after milling should be placed in the liquid to further enrich the properties of the serum. Liferoot is used in three very simple draughts, known by swampfolk as the “holy trinity”. Combined with the juice of Kingsblood berries, it creates a potion of healing, with the milled thistles of Bruiseweed, a potion of regeneration, (colloquially referred to as Troll’s Blood), and with the crushed leaves of Stranglekelp, protection against poisons and nature magicks. Seeing the torchlit creation of such remedies among the brown fog and hanging moss of the Duskwallow swamps is an esoteric and captivating experience. No alcohol or oils should be used to bind these reagents; only the waters of Liferoot will do. Additionally no extreme heat source should be used to promote binding, as the heat of the swamp works its way through in less than a day’s time. If alcohol, oil, or flame are used,, the dilution will become a brown and useless muck resembling mud. Most Duskwallow swamp-dwellers simply combine most or all of these plants, depending on availability, in a large pool of Liferoot cleansed and infused water. Dipping a flask or skein in when needed before traveling into the deepmarsh provides them protection from much of the major dangers of the swamps.
Liferoot
Liferoot is commonly found at the edge of rivers and bodies of water throughout Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. It grows in abundance - which is wonderful considering how many uses it has! Some healing draughts call for liferoot due to the natural healing properties of the plant as well as the sweet flavor it lends to potions. Its root have a spongy, meaty texture and it can be gathered and eaten raw when circumstances are desperate. (Such is not recommended.) Though, more often it is used as a light sweetener in cooking.
Large quantities of liferoot have been found to be mildly hallucinogenic and potent, pure distillations of it are to be avoided. Skilled alchemists know the proper quantities but it is not unheard of for an apprentice to accidentally drug a buyer or patient with an improperly prepared healing potion.
Often gathered from the shores of tranquil ponds and slow streams, liferoot has adopted a relaxed, docile meaning. Liferoot is frequently sent in reply to a heated message as a way of telling the recipient to relax and cool their temper before things get out of hand. When it is not sent in response to a fiery message, it is seen as a sign of appreciation or respect for their tranquil, gentle nature. A gift of liferoot is seen as particularly kind when given to a healer who can brew it into beneficial potions and elixirs.
