At the beginning of CotBP we see Weatherby and James wearing brunnette wigs while the other officer on board still had white wigs. Do you think this was just a visual help for the time skip... or maybe was it in fashion then so it was a statement of class, because i dont think (at least in Weatherby's case that they intended us to believe that was his actual hair lol) ... I dont know Ive been thinking about wigs a lot since I read your post on James wig hair.

keira + jdav mention that it's for the passage of time actually! they riff a little on both norrington's and gov swann's wigs in their commentary.

as i understand it, you have the right idea, it's certainly about status! white wigs are the most formal and respected, if ridiculous. but speaking generally, colored wigs were cheaper, and so pretty common for everyday wear among the merchant class. a lieutenant wouldn't have the time or servants to maintain a white wig, but he still ranks as an officer and would want to appear older, so the colored wig makes sense. he'd probably be powdering his hair if potc leaned more on the early 1720/30s look and less on the american revolution 1770s look.

but it's also important to note, as long as i'm being pedantic: the royal navy didn't have uniforms until 1748 so literally anything goes lmfao. i'm talking out my ass live your life

7. what's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

i'm so grateful for the people who lean into her calculating nature and conclusion-jumping, particularly when it gets spun into a kind of anxiety. it's a style of inner monologue i haven't quite mastered myself! but always good to see how her mind works even when in the most unfamiliar of piratical situations :)

8. what's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

lmao. very specific, but: there's a worryingly present thread in norribeth works that elizabeth is, let's say, unsuitable for norrington, and so she gets her personality stripped away to become the stereotypical simpering period drama wife. but they will still put her with norrington because he "deserves" the woman he loves or some shit, even while it's clear the creator does not like her. it's disgusting to me tbh. just write a different pairing if you find half of it annoying, good lord.

17. what's a ship for this character you don't hate but it's not your favorite that you're fine with?

i mean it's gotta be her with will. my obligatory disclaimer: they are absolutely integral to the story of potc and need each other to function within it. i will admit to swooning every time i watch the "blacksmith's hands" scene in cotbp.

but i've never been a love-at-first-sight enjoyer and the way they're written in AWE actively bothers my sense of storytelling. i really don't mind them, and am glad there are people still rabid about them 22 years later. just not for me.
