Fallen Angels (Wong Kar-wai, 1995)
Leon Lai and Karen Mok in Fallen Angels
Cast: Leon Lai, Michelle Reis, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Charlie Yeung, Karen Mok, Chan Man-lei. Screenplay: Wong Kar-wai. Cinematography: Christopher Doyle. Production design: William Chang. Film editing: William Chang, Wong Ming Lam. Music: Frankie Chan, Roel A. Garcia.
Feverish, fascinating, and violently funny, Fallen Angels is a kind of companion piece to Wong Kar-wai’s Chungking Express (1994), sharing some of the same setting and, in a very different role, the actor Takeshi Kaneshiro. I’m not steeped enough in Asian pop culture to appreciate it as fully as some, but I found its frantic camera tricks and frequently over-the-top acting somewhere between tiring and tonic. I’m glad I saw it, but I’m more glad that Wong showed us that he could move on from the frenzied youth culture of these early films to the mature brilliance of In the Mood for Love (2000).

If we're doing pining and requited yet unrequited love, I highly recommend the movie "Comrades: Almost a Love Story" (1996).
Both the leads (Leon Lai and Maggie Cheung) imbue their characters with such sincerity and depth, the story spans a couple of decades or so, and it is about people making choices and doing their best not to regret their choices set against a Hong Kong before it was returned to China, when it felt like everyone had a chance to reach their dreams.
It's a quiet story, with quiet joys and quiet sorrows, nothing flashy or loud, and it is so good for the days of light drizzle and you have nowhere you need to be.
Park Hae-il is underrated in every sense of the word. In a matter of minutes he managed to catch my attention in his brief role in Memories of Murder by Bong Joon-ho. I watched it shortly after seeing Wong Kar-wai's Fallen Angels in a local cinema, so I immediately drew a comparison between him and actor Leon Lai. They've both got this similar magnetism—such sweet faces in their youth, playing such shady characters. Gyeongju is another one I love from his filmography, in all its Hong Sang-soo Zhang Lu essence. Then of course, his role in Park Chan-wook's Decision to Leave. He seems to be a very private person—something I fully respect and appreciate—but I'd love to know more about him and his thoughts on cinema, just to have a little insight on how he manages to constantly choose great projects.
