Representing Minbari
I love how to the human, Delenn is the most uptight, rule abdbiding character. But whenever she goes back home, she turns back into a rebellious teenager, calling out the Gray Council for their mistakes! 🤣
I love how they really made the most moral character in Babylon 5, the one who helped start the war with the humans. So many female characters have to be "perfect," but they really let her have so much depth. It makes sense that they let characters like G'Kar and Londo go all out and be evil and turn good and be evil again, but it's rarer to see from one of the main-er characters, much less a female main character.
She is so strong and firm and unbending in her beliefs, yet she had a moment of weakness when she started the war. Her feelings of rage were understanable when her mentor died, but her actions were inexcusable, which is rare to see. People often write women to have an "out" if you will to make their moral ambiguity make more sense. She doesn't have that. She has to deal with the guilt of that decision immediately after and deals with it for the rest of her life. She reminds me of Obi-Wan- such a strong moral compass & yet still - or perhaps because of that - has so much to feel guilty over.
Delenn really is an excellent character in how she respects other political viewpoints so easily cause she is always looking at a character's bigger picture even if in every other regard they would make sense to be enemies. Her morality really defines her as a character, and that makes her my favorite!
Lennier really sums up her character when he says that "She does not walk in the same world that we do." She sees the best in everyone. She believes in her cause and all of the people on her side. She has so much faith and love that her countrymen do not have. And she thinks that they have more love and loyalty than they actually do. But she inspires them to live more like she does. So even though her faith isn't rooted in total truth, her faith is making the truth she believes in stronger.
The fact that she goes from despising the humans to marrying one really shows how full circle her redemption and healing go.
