Round 1 - 2022 (In America: An Anthology of Fashion / Gilded Glamour) - Match 41 of 101
Lena Waithe (Versace), left
"[The outfit was] inspired by American Southwestern flair and turn-of-the-century menās tailoring. The jacket featuring an open back and narrow lapels is in reference to the style of late-1800s America while the crystal details reference to the glitz of the Gilded Age." (x)
vs. Fredrik Robertsson (Iris van Herpen), right
"To make his Met Gala fantasy come to life, he worked with his friend Herpen to craft a custom, one-of-a-kind creation. Titled Quantum, the architectural look was inspired by Robertssonās fearless approach to fashion overall. āItās inspired by how you express and transform yourself through fashion,ā says Herpen of the ensemble. āFredrikās genderfluidity in dressing is so inspiring, and the look radiates and plays with combined masculinity and femininity.ā Feathery embellishments, made of recycled Mylar, were combined with delicate fabrics like tulle to create that interesting juxtaposition. The duo also thought about theĀ Costume Institute exhibitionās themesĀ around American fashion. āSince neither of us is American, we discussed how liberty is in Americaās founding ethos and identity, and Iris embraced this liberty to design freely, instead of sketching within the constraints of this theme,ā Robertsson says." "We wanted to embrace Fredrikās ongoing personal transformations. [It] is made from upcycled fabric that was first digitally printed and then heat-bonded to recycled mylar. The feathery embellishments were transformed into graphic, strong and gravity defying textures that float away from the skin, while futuristic feathers are glitching around the face, to make a weightless look that radiates with you in all directions."
