After Johann survives a vicious murder-suicide attempt by his own division teacher, his school sex scandal explodes into a national uproar. To Taehee's anguish, Johann disappears for 3 years. Both boys grow into men and live separate lives. Taehee works in a night club alongside the flirty bartender Jungin. Meanwhile, the lonely Johann lies low. One day, Taehee and Johann catch a glimpse of each other. But, Taehee's jealous friend Dooyong will do anything to keep the two men apart.
It's a coming-of-age story, with slow burn and angst. It's non-graphic but it has several content warnings: grooming, rape, attempted murder, attempted suicide, use of drugs, homophobia.

Now, that you've finished Karaoke Iko, do you enjoy the series? What do you love about it? Can you see the subtext in them? Like, can you see why there're quite a lot of shippers for KyoSato? Do you want to read the sequel (Famiresu)? Sorry if I ask too much!
I enjoyed it very much, thanks for asking.
I'm up to date with famiresu too. I love it, the slice of life aspect of it makes it feel personal, like you are part of this seemingly unrelated group of people that are actually conected in some way, beautifully mundane.
Satomiās my favorite, heās smart and level-headed but still a young naive kid, his crush is pretty cute. Kyoji, on the other hand, is such an interesting character. Heās a yakuza, clearly not the best role model, and even if he never does anything outright inappropriate, just getting close to Satomi is already wrong. You can tell he craves normal human connection, and Satomi gives him that.
In Karaoke Iko I never felt there was anything romantic. If anything, once Kyoji realized Satomi was starting to like him, it was a wake-up call to pull back. Satomi himself didnāt even fully understand his feelings, just that he cared for an adult more than he should, and a yakuza, no less.
In Famiresu, though, the line is definitely blurrier. Kyoji leaves it up to Satomi to define what their relationship is, but he doesnāt make it easy since he avoids labeling it himself. In a way Kyoji is A coward (despite living in the brutal and unforgiving world of the yakuza), heās too afraid to face Satomi head on. He knows Satomi has feelings for him and is attached, but heās terrified that acknowledging it could destroy their relationship. After all, 1) heās yakuza, 2) he might not be capable to reciprocate Satomiās feelings, 3) heās much older, 4) he doesnāt want to hurt Satomi, and 5) he fears losing the only āpureā thing in his life.
As for shipping, I donāt mind what people do with fictional characters, but for me thatās not the point. I love Karaoke Iko and Famiresu Iko because I can genuinely empathize with all the characters and it makes me feel all kinds of emotions. Don't get me wrong, I love their "quetionable relationship" and all of its complexity, but I love it because is well written and tasteful, at least to this point, so whatever the author decides to do with them (i trust) will be ok.
