EnsimmÀinen lapsi on vielÀ niin hauraan oloinen ja nyt hÀn odottaa jo toista. PelkÀsin jÀlleen lapsen keskenmenoa joten jÀtin vaimoni rauhaan. SyyhÀn oli kokonaan minussa, ettÀ menetimme esikoisemme.
 Hengitykseni vinkui, kuin olisi ollut pilli kurkussa. Jatkuvasti toistuvat keuhkoputken tulehdukset heikensivÀt oloani. Niska, hartia ja selkÀsÀryt valvottivat öisin. Asiat etenivÀt niin pitkÀlle,  ettÀ minulla todettiin ammatista johtuva sairaus ja minulle tarjottiin mahdollisuutta uudelleen kouluttautua. Uusi ammatti ja just kun olin uraputkessa edellisen kanssa.
 Kaksi pientÀ lasta kotona ja minÀ koulunpenkille, toisaalta jÀivÀthÀn aikaiset herÀtykset pois. Osa-aikatyö kaupassa ja kaupallinen etÀopiskelu tenttipÀivineen tuntui mielekkÀÀltÀ vaihtoehdolta. Fyysinen olo parani ja ajatukset luistivat, elin suvantovaihetta. Parisuhteen hoitaminen oli kuitenkin vaikeaa aikaisempien kokemusten opettamana. PelkÀsin jatkuvasti puolisoni lÀheisyyttÀ ja suuntasin rakkauteni lapsiin, heillÀ ei ollut vaatimuksia.
 MieltÀni kuitenkin kalvoi jokin kÀsittÀmÀtön voima, itsetuhoajatukset pyörivÀt ajoittaan pÀÀssÀni. NÀistÀ en kuitenkaan kertonut kenellekÀÀn.
Voimani hupenivat ja mielialani laski. Kaikki oli jotenkin sekaisin. Aloitetut asiat jÀivÀt kesken, leijuin jossakin pÀÀmÀÀrÀttömÀssÀ suonsilmÀssÀ. Ylös pyrkiminen sieltÀ suosta tuntui aina vain hankalammalta, tuntui kuin olisin vajonnut kokoajan vain syvemmÀlle. Fyysiset sairaudet lisÀÀntyivÀt jÀlleen ja jouduin turvautumaan toistuvasti sairaalan hoitojaksoihin.
 JĂ€lleen kerran ensiavussa ja kysyn nuorelta kandilta, josko saisin âkallonkutistajaaâ, kun meinaa henkinen kantti loppua. Tyydyin kilttinĂ€ ihmisenĂ€ hĂ€nen vastaukseen, âei keuhkoja psykiatri parannaâ, joten vika oli vain keuhkoissani. NiinhĂ€n minulle uskoteltiin. Olin tĂ€ysin loppu omaa itseĂ€ni ja vika on vain keuhkoissa.
 2000 vuoden syyskuussa minulle sitten myönnettiin elÀke työperÀisen sairauden vuoksi. Kas kummaa samalla pÀivÀmÀÀrÀllÀ vaimolleni osoitettiin pysyvÀ työsuhde.
Silloin koko perhe asetelma kÀÀntyi aivan pĂ€invastaiseksi, vaimostani tuli vihdoin kokopĂ€ivĂ€inen työlĂ€inen, minusta tuli kodinhoitaja. Nyt vihdoin voisin ottaa rennommin, niinhĂ€n minĂ€ luulin, mutta siitĂ€ seuraavalla kerralla. Â

The Search for the Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie, No 1: Tollhouse
There are many things I love about college--and one of those things is our ability to solve any problem with an easy fix. For example, my friend Ellen doesn't have a mixing bowl, so she uses a pasta pot. And it works just as well as a mixing bowl, without taking up her precious storage space. Bam. Solution.
All the while as we mixed these together in her pasta pot, I didn't inform Ellen of my newest quest: my search for the perfect chocolate chip cookie. But it's true, it's my new mission in life. I have never been able to make a satisfactory chocolate chip cookie; my mother and I have always resorted to the store-bought dough, occasionally getting fancy and using the recipe off the back of our Tollhouse chocolate chips. But it has never really lived up to expectations.
Because I believe in giving the benefit of the doubt, I was glad when we decided to make these for our a cappella date auction. A true test of the classic, and a good beginning to this search.Â

Baking temp: 375°
Baking time: ~8 minutes or until they're just starting to brown.
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 eggs
1 12oz bag chocolate chips
Preheat the oven.
Combine flour, soda, and salt in a bowl (or a pasta pot if that suits your college lifestyle) and mix.
Beat in butter.Â
Add in sugars as you beat in the butter.
Drop in vanilla extract, then mix everything together until the mixture is fairly creamy and light and delici--I mean, really bad for you and you should never ever eat it raw. Right.
Beat in eggs, mixing well.
Stir in chocolate chips (after popping one or two in your mouth).
Drop dough in even chunks onto greased cookie sheet. Making them even in crucial! Uneven cookies cook very differently, and this recipe can overcook really easily...and they're just not as good!
Remove from pan pretty quickly, as they do keep cooking.Â
Eat while warm. These don't keep (even for three hours) very well, but the gooey chocolate of a fresh baked cookies always wins.

You'll always be a classic, but I'm sorry, Tollhouse. You're still failing me. For me, a perfect chocolate chip cookie is a bit thicker and more cakey. These cookies are pretty thin, so much so that you don't really get to taste the cookie with every bite. There's not enough cookie in the middle for you to fully appreciate the gooey texture and the contrast it has to the crisp outside edge.
And when I had one at the auction three hours after taking them out of the oven they were...bland. And chocolate chip cookies should never be bland. The dough is yummy because you get to taste the wonderfulness of the brown sugar, but to be honest, I'd rather keep this guy in dough form.
