Finally able to share this project! #WIP sketch of my commission from @JOANN This piece is super exciting and bigger than I’ve ever done before! This 50” painting will be part of massive art installation in JOANN’s new headquarters store in Torrance, CA. All art for the installation will be done by California artists and designers - each assigned a part of California’s history, fashion and culture to be inspired by. My prompt is “Kustom Kulture” - The term was was born out of the hot rod culture of Southern California of the 1960s. Growing up with a car enthusiast hot rod loving dad myself, I was exposed to car shows, rockabilly and kustom kulture from a young age. I constantly listened to these weird old vinyl records my Dad had called "Hot Rod Hootenanny” and “Surffink” (check them out of Spotify now!) and developed an obsession for the character of “Rat Fink” and the art of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. So when JOANN came to me with this assignment completely out of the blue I couldn’t believe it! I have the opportunity to pay tribute to Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and combine his style with my own! I definitely have to work in my very own version of Rat Fink who I’m calling “Bunny Fink” Can you spot her? Stay tuned! “Evil Most Fair” Acrylic on Wood. 2015. For #WonderGroundGallery Here’s # 3 on my WonderGround countdown! This piece started with this antique mirror frame! Photos of it don’t do it justice! It was incredible! My Dad custom cut a wood oval to fit and I painted her evil highness on it! Now this piece was NOT an easy one and may still be one of the most challenging pieces I’ve ever done. I had my heart set on doing an acrylic pour to create the green flames, and it turns out this was a lot harder than anticipated. I think I did somewhere around 5 pours to get this result, which ended up being worth it because it turned out SO cool! I also had a lot of trouble getting a final approval on my drawing, and I almost gave up completely.
