SMBs vs polo wraps?
Honestly, most people see it as a matter of preference. With Gold, I use the Professional's Choice SMBs on the front only. I used to use all four but for some reason it irritates his skin to have hind boots on, instead I often use polos. I don't use bell boots, though it's super common for barrel racers to do so even if they don't have shoes. Gold doesn't have shoes nor any sort of overreaching problem.Β
What I want to stress here is the importance of HOW TO PUT BOOTS OR POLO WRAPS ON PROPERLY. Please please please learn. SMBs are obviously easier to put on, but are more expensive. If you choose polos, for whatever reason, make sure they are on correctly. I recently saw a girl with her polo wraps wrapped incorrectly go into the arena to run poles. I should have said something. She ran the piss out of her horse and upon leaving the ring the horse was limping very obviously and refused to put weight on the hurt leg. I would feel like shit if that were my horse and I did that. She was young, but her parents unwrapped the leg to take a look and didn't say anything about the poor application of the polo. There are videos on youtube and by big time trainers all over the internet that show how to put on your leg protection correctly. It doesn't take long to learn, and the videos are short. A small investment for the soundness of your horse.Β
