leeward is a beautiful name for a baby boy
My favorite thing in a historical fiction book is when the author incorporates writing styles of the era into the work. It just makes it feel so much more grounded in the time period! And its displays how much care and reaserch the author has put into the period of interest.
And bonus points: when the main character is queer and understands their queerness in ways that echo the cultural understanding of queerness of the time.
This post is about The Song Of Achilles and Leeward- both of which balance the style of their period setting with modern readability to incredible success. (If anyone has any other reccs though 👀)
Lilly Pulitzer finds a second youth under the Florida sun
Published November 20, 2025 In Key West, the last inhabited island in the Florida Keys, where the highway ends and the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico begin, the international fashion press and numerous influencers gathered on Wednesday night to attend the Lilly Pulitzer fashion show. Oh I am in so love with Katie Daysh's Leeward.
As I mentioned in this post, this book had me hooked from the moment I started reading it. Now that I've finished it, I can confirm that it continued to do so. I was so invested in the characters, the search for the Ulysses and the relationship slowly growing between Courtney and Nightingale that I sometimes stayed up way later than I should just to see what would happen next.
And the ending! The gentleness in every touch. The understanding. The acceptance, both bestowed and embraced. It was exactly what I was hoping for and I cannot wait to see where the next book takes the characters.
I can honestly say that this is the Age of Sail novel I've been looking for and I can't thank Katie Daysh enough for writing such a beautiful and gripping story. Hands down my favourite fiction novel that I've read so far this year.

Years after Hiram found Arthur on the beach and saved him, his life has taken a turn for the worse. But not all hope is lost.
Part 2 to my Leeward-Mermaid-AU :) For the whumptober prompt "fancy event".
After the disaster that was me forcing my way through reading Master and Commander, I have finally found an Age of Sail novel that is an absolute delight to read:
Leeward by Katie Daysh
The first chapter alone was so intense it had me hooked at once. Poor Leroy. I'm now at chapter 10 and can honestly say I do not want to put this book down (a remarkable thing after years of struggling to find the motivation to read). I adore the characters, the tension, the mystery surrounding the Ulysses and Nightingale's struggles to find his footing, both with his new command and his new First Lieutenant.
I cannot wait to see where this journey will lead.
Edit: here is where the journey led (aka my reaction after finishing the book)
Omg thank you to the authors of the 6 works in the Nightingale & Courtney tag on ao3.
Doing very important work to help cure my post-book melancholy.
