Lee was in a predicament.
In a blur of messy party planning, she had forgotten to get lamb for the roast. With a little less than a week left till the actual party, Lee was scrambling to find something suitable.
However, nowhere she looked seemed to fit her requirements. Either the waiting list for the meat is too long, or the actual lamb didn’t look healthy enough to be edible. She couldn’t afford to be picky at a time like this, but Lee has standards for what she's serving!
Especially when this party is crucial for her job, her bosses, current and potential investors, and their partners will be attending that night. The least she could do is get some nice juicy lamb.
But looking at how things are going, she may not reach that goal.
Frustrated, Lee cried to her cousin—Jamie—about her situation one drunken night.
“What am I going to do?” Lee whined.
Opened bottles sat collectively on the pristine marble table. Deep magenta colored liquid filled the two wine glasses. Lee’s usual bright, cheery smile was replaced by a frown as her cheeks flushed a soft shade of pink that matched her hair.
Jamie sat across from her, pitying the woman as she sprawled across the cold surface. The twenty-three-year-old didn’t know how to help her, as they didn’t know the first thing when it came to butchering.
Then, in a tipsy revelation, a face came to Jamie’s mind.
“I think I know someone who can help.” A hiccup escaped from their lips.
“Really, who?!” Lee shot up, desperation grew with each second passing before Jamie replied.
“You know the owner of Tranquil Meadows?”
Lee nodded, recognizing the name to be the farm that had the longest waiting list for meat.
“I know the owner, maybe I could introduce you to them.” Those words hung in the air as Jamie swallowed the last bit of the fermented grape juice in their glass.
“Really? Thank you! Thank you!” The pink-haired woman ran up and embraced her cousin. “What would I do without you!”
“Oh, don’t thank me too soon~” Jamie whispered as they tried to hide the mischievous grin that was forming.
“Nonsense! How about another glass?” Lee offered as she brought out another bottle.
Jamie’s hair stood up. Thinking about downing another bottle seemed too much at the time. Especially when they still had to drive back to their house, and they had to wake up early to tell you, the owner of Tranquil Meadows, the master plan.
“So…do you think you could help?” Jamie asked as you stood there frozen with chicken feed in your hands.
It took you a while to realize what Jamie had asked you to do. Sure, you have an abundant amount of extra lamb that you could spare, but it is who you’re giving it is the problem.
Lee Last, your best friend’s cousin, and the one whom you accidentally fell for. You saw her during Cove and Jamie’s wedding. Unfortunately for you, it was love at first sight.
You couldn’t tell if it was the way she conducted herself or the brilliant aura she carried. Perhaps it was that cheeky grin that actually sold you. Either way, your eyes followed her throughout the entire day, unable to do anything about it.
Jamie knew that fact well.
They had to bite their cheek to keep themselves as they watched a wave of panic looming over your face.
“Jamie how could you?!” You screeched, dropping the chicken feed.
Jamie’s laugh soon echoed into the wind—unable to keep it under wraps.
“Aw, come on! Lee’s nice. Besides, I'm sure we both know that you’d be ecstatic to finally talk to her.”
That simple tease sent shivers up your spine as a million and one scenarios popped into your head. What would she say? How will you reply? What will you two talk about?
You shook it off. After all, you were far too grown for middle-school-level romance fantasies.
“Is that a no?” Jamie asked, almost disappointed by your sudden motion.
“No! Er-No!… I mean!” You stuttered trying to set the situation straight.
“I can give her the lambs she needs, but—” your voice trailed off before Jamie finished it.
“—But you don’t want to talk to her.” You could almost hear their eye roll.
This wasn’t the first time you avoided meeting Lee—or even meeting people in general.
You were more reserved, timid, and shy than Jamie. Meeting people wasn’t your forte; heck, you don’t even remember befriending Jamie or Cove until you considered them your friends.
That was why you retreated to your farm—Tranquil Meadows.
Animals wouldn’t judge you for whatever reason, unlike some people. Plus, some are a lot more fluffier!
Just you, your animals, and a guitar in a bright sunny field of verdant grass. That was all you needed in life, where you don’t need the hassle of socializing with others. Though there are times when you had to socialize with the hired help that you somehow managed to secure.
It was truly a perfect life with no personal stress—
“Come on! This could be your chance to finally get to know her!” Jamie sighed as you finished adding feed to the chicken feeder.
“I'm sorry, Jamie, but I can’t… At least not right now.” You weren’t sure when you’ll ever be ready.
“I can pack you the lambs Lee will need. Just give me a moment and finish up here.”
Jamie shrugged, finally giving up for now. Fortunately, they changed the subject to something less stressful.
You thought that was it. That the topic was dropped until some random Wednesday night with Jamie. But the next day, a text from an unknown number changed everything.
???:
Thank you so much for the lamb!
You’re a lifesaver
You were confused. You don’t give out your number unless necessary, and the message didn’t appear to be a part of a scam text. The events from the previous day didn’t come to mind as you sent a reply.
???:
Oh!
This is Lee
Sorry, I should’ve started with that
Jamie gave me your number ^.^
Memories of the day before resurfaced as you clenched your phone with your hand. You wanted to strangle Jamie so badly. You should’ve known that this would’ve happened. After all, they take after their moms in their shared mischievous planning.
Lee:
Sorry if it made you uncomfortable.
I asked for it because I wanted to thank you for the lambs when you have such a long waitlist :D
You:
It's no problem
I had extra lambs in storage, so it wasn’t that difficult of a request :)
After sending that text, you wanted to smash your phone into a pile of rocks. Your text felt too formal, and that silly little smiley face felt too casual. Would Lee read your text and misunderstand it? Does she think you're flirting or something?
Eyes glared at the three dots on the screen. Your heart raced as you anticipated that next text from Lee. Each passing second felt like an eternity as those three cursed dots kept appearing and disappearing before finally forming into a message.
Lee:
Would you like to go to my party?
Your body went cold—quickly typing out a “no” before erasing it. That was your usual response, but something stopped you.
You were content with Lee not knowing about your existence. But greed took over your heart when that first message from Lee came through.
For the first time in your life, you wanted to talk more. But the thoughts of being in a crowded area, on a yacht, with no one you know, influenced retyping that “no”.
Jamie:
Did Lee invite her to her party yet?
I swear that was all her idea!
She was the one who begged me to give her your number!!
You:
Uh huh
And she stalked me to find my number (¬`‸´¬)
Jamie:
She actually did that lol
You couldn’t believe what you were reading. Lee stalking you? Nothing came to mind as to why she would ever do that.
Jamie:
Nah im kidding
But Lee apparently did look you up shortly after I told her that you were the owner
Before you could even type out an answer, Jamie had already changed the topic.
Jamie:
Anyway….about the party (˵ ¬ᴗ¬˵)
You knew the teasing that would come from Jamie if you were ever to admit that you were hesitating to decline Lee’s invitation. So before you could even think it, though, you had already sent out a message.
Jamie:
What why :(((
Is it ‘cause you’ll be by yourself in a boat?
Jamie:
Dw Cove and I will be there ^.^
Lee invited us ‘cause I helped introduce her to you
You physically sighed. It was true that with Jamie and Cove, you would be a lot more comfortable. But you also know that there's a slight chance that the two will bail out last minute because of whatever reason you couldn’t argue with.
It doesn’t happen a lot as the two make a point to keep their promises, but you couldn’t help but curse them out when it unfortunately happens.
Cove and Jamie were, in fact, on the boat like they promised. But you lost them ages ago.
You had underestimated the size of the party and especially the size of the yacht. It was like a maze where everywhere you turned, someone would come up to you and ask if you two met.
At some point, you gave up looking for the couple. Assuming that they were making out somewhere private or something similar.
You hid away from the area where people tended to congregate. Opting to get some fresh air towards the back, where there were fewer people.
It was nice. The sound of the engine running, splashing water, and the smell of the ocean was calming, but not in the way your farm comforted you.
You were so out of it—lost in your thoughts—you hadn’t noticed someone coming behind you.
“Not much of a party person, huh?” A voice you could only hear in your dreams spoke.
“Yeah…sorry…” You turned around.
Big mistake. You weren’t ready for the sight that was about to grace your eyes.
Lee was dressed in a deep sage green dress. Flared at the bottom as white ruffles clung to the sides of her arms. Creating an off-the-shoulder look that exposed her reddened shoulders.
You could feel the heat rising to your face. You mentally thanked the cold night for disguising your flustered face.
“You don’t need to apologize. I was the one who suddenly invited you.” Lee walked up and took her place beside you.
You hoped to whatever god that existed that Lee wouldn’t hear the rhythmic thumping of your heart. It was all you could think about, as not even the music in the background could distract you.
You two spend some time together talking. Mostly about your farm animals that you couldn’t help but get excited about.
You two also shared some stories—the funny and embarrassing moments of Cove and Jamie. It has been a long time since you’ve talked to a new person like this. It almost made you consider reaching out to more people.
“I hear from Jamie that you’re shy.” Lee suddenly changed the topic.
“I guess you could say that…” You looked away as if you were a criminal caught for a well-known fact.
A soft laugh came from the woman beside you, “I’m surprised that you even accepted my invitation. I half expected that you’d decline.”
“Well, I was until Jamie told me that they and Cove were coming.”
“Oh? Where are Jamie and Cove anyway?” Lee’s short hair spun as she looked around for familiar faces.
“I don’t know… I lost them a while ago!” That last part came out as a cry instead of a complaint.
You could feel Lee’s pitying eyes staring at you. It made you feel even more awkward.
“Wanna go find them?” She cheekily suggested.
Though the offer was tempting, it felt weird to know that you’d potentially be walking into a more private moment between the couple.
As if she knew what you were thinking, Lee spoke up again with an even bigger grin, “I doubt they’re doing any of that—Cove would be too embarrassed.”
Thinking over it again, you nodded, allowing Lee to drag you around the ship.
The first stop was the kitchen. With Jamie and Cove both being foodies, it wouldn’t be that big of a surprise to see them around there.
Walking in, you were instantly hit with the aroma of spices. It was mouthwatering to the point where you didn’t even hesitate to take the lamb skewer Lee offered.
She watched as you nibbled the stick, scanning for any traces of Jamie and Cove. It was almost endearing—like a lost puppy looking for its owner.
With no luck, you two moved on to the next place, then the next place, and another. At this point, you two were considering that Jamie and Cove were hiding away from you two on purpose, and wanted to quit.
But you two had one final place to check, which was unfortunately the deck.
Jamie warned Lee multiple times that you don’t like crowds. Which is why she offered for you to stay back instead of the inevitable socializing happening on the deck. But to her surprise, not only did you come with her, you were talking.
It was short and curt, with just enough friendliness for the other party to leave without a negative perspective.
It was methodical in a way that shocked Lee. It was a complete 180 from the person she had been hanging out with; it was almost jarring to see.
No amount of time spent together could capture the way you maneuvered around the conversation till the other party ended. Lee couldn’t believe that the person standing beside her was the same as the one on your social media.
Yet Lee couldn’t help but notice the way your brows furrowed with each new person coming up. The way your eyes dulled in color, not like the way that they were when it was just you two at the back.
“Nothing again,” you sighed, finally getting away from the crowd.
“Where could they be hiding? We’ve checked everywhere…” Lee muttered, slouching over the rails of the boat.
You followed her lead—slouching over the rails, watching the boat cut through the water. A thought crossed your mind.
“They’re probably swimming in the water, probably watching as the boat abandons them.”
Lee let out a laugh, loudly agreeing with you and your scenario.
“Probably, Cove loves the water!”
“Yeah, that man practically lives it.” You let out your own soft laugh.
Suddenly, a piece of meat flew across you from above. Looking up, you saw the two people you and Lee have been searching for.
“Jamie! Cove!” You yelped as Lee followed your eyes.
The couple waved as you two rushed up to meet them. They were on the top floor, supposed to be blocked off from most guests, but of course, those two sneaked their way up.
“Took you forever,” Jamie grinned. “We could see you two running around the ship.”
“Yeah, ‘cause you two abandoned me!” You shot back.
“That was my fault. I wanted some meat skewers.” Cove jumped in with a couple of said skewers in his hands.
“Yeah… we sorta lost you when we came back.” Jamie rubbed the back of their head.
“Well, at least you’re not swimming in the water like we thought you were.” Lee chuckled as everyone started to laugh.
For the rest of the night, you stayed up there with Cove and Jamie. Lee would go down since she's the hostess, but she’s always come back up.
By the end of the night, you were happy to come. For once, your well-loved hermit life was not enough after tasting the tantalizing delight of talking with Lee.
But you’d have to return to your shell at some point, so you quickly shoved your feelings down in your chest and make believe that this night was enough.
Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, there was another who shared that same sentiment. But she isn’t willing to call that night enough.
