sobbing in the club rn as i dreamt of me reading over a Relics AU i finished writing where Helene is fully aware of her role as Dr. Spillane in the story and remembers every iteration of the game where she died and came back from the start and how it affects how she treats people and her very own disposition when she reaches the 3rd book again and again and again trying to find a way to have everyone live (except for the person she can never save) and it's been more than a thousand times in a course of a thousand relived lifetimes and she is so so tired of losing, but all she has is her complex to see her loved ones alive and happy and well, here's A snip under the cut:
"If you die, i'll kill everyone in that island myself."
"Of course you will, my sweet fierce angel."
Helene closes her eyes as she lets MarÃa pull her down to the mattress, and hugs her tightly. All she wants is to hold her wife in her arms and never let go, to bundle her up in the bedsheets and hide her away from the rest of the world.
But she can't. Much as she tried, this was inevitable.
"I love you, Helene." MarÃa sighs, and Helene feels her grip tighten. "It was so hard for me to say it, but now I never want to say anything else ever again. In case, in case I never—"
"I love you too, MarÃa. Always, forever." She cuts her off, knowing what comes next. She's heard her beloved say it more than a hundred times, in more than a thousand lifetimes.
"Always?"
"In this life, and across more than a thousand lifetimes. It was always you, MarÃa. It's always going to be you."
Helene feels tears flow down her face, which MarÃa wipes ever so gently, before pressing a kiss over them.
No more words are said, as they bask in their closeness and warmth.
Whatever awaits them in the island is only a hell Helene is half familiar with; but carrying MarÃa's love against her tender heart, she hopes that they both make it through the trials ahead. No, she NEEDS MarÃa to make it ahead.
She has worked hard enough to fail now, and she doesn't think her heart can ever take another blow.

I had wanted to get this up before I went back to work two weeks ago, but that obviously did not happen. Jet lag had me in a haze until just before I went back to work, then the last two weeks have been back-to-school teacher tired. Love my job, but it is exhausting. That, and I rewrote a large chunk of the chapter. It was originally going to be more angsty, but it just didn't feel right. Hiccup didn't feel like Hiccup. So I deleted a large chunk and rewrote it.
