12V vs. 24V vs. 220V for Cabinet LED Strips – Which One Should You Pick?
When it comes to lighting up cabinets, one question always comes up: 12V, 24V, or 220V?
If you're using our wardrobe lighting, you already know – we run on 12V. And here's why that's a great choice for most cabinet projects.
First, let's clear one thing up:
🔹 12V & 24V (Low Voltage) – Safe to touch, DIY-friendly, no electric shock risk. Requires a driver to convert mains power.
🔹 220V (High Voltage) – Direct mains connection. Higher shock risk. Professional installation required. Not recommended for ordinary cabinets.
For cabinets, low voltage is always the safer bet.
So why do we use 12V for our wardrobe lights?
Here's the honest breakdown:
12V Advantages:
✅ Widely available and affordable power supplies
✅ Perfect for short to medium runs (under 5 meters) – which covers most wardrobe and cabinet applications
✅ Safe to handle during installation – no electrician needed
✅ Compatible with most dimmers and controllers on the market
✅ Our entire product line is built around 12V – everything works together seamlessly
24V is great too, but it's more common for longer runs (over 5 meters) like large retail displays or commercial shelving. For ordinary home cabinets and wardrobes, 12V does the job perfectly.
220V? Skip it. Higher voltage means higher risk. And for a wardrobe, you really don't want mains voltage running through tight spaces with metal hinges and moving parts.
Bottom line for your cabinet project:
✅ 12V – Safe, reliable, and perfect for most wardrobes and cabinets. Plus, our lights are designed specifically for 12V systems, so you get consistent performance and easy installation.
✅ 24V – Better for long runs over 5 meters. Not necessary for standard home cabinets.
❌ 220V – Not worth the risk. Leave it for ceiling lights.
💡 Pro tip: Always use the correct power supply for your strip voltage. A 12V strip needs a 12V driver – no exceptions!

COB or SMD – Which LED Strip Should You Use for Kitchen Cabinets?
We get this question all the time: "Which LED strip has no visible light spots?" And if you've ever installed under-cabinet lighting, you know exactly what we're talking about – those tiny dots that ruin the whole clean look.
Here's the deal:
COB strips are the way to go if you want a completely seamless, dotless light. They pack tons of tiny chips tightly together and cover them with a gel layer, so what you see is one continuous line of light, not individual points. It looks clean, professional, and expensive – perfect for kitchens where the strip is visible.
SMD strips have individual chips with gaps in between. They're cheaper, but up close or at certain angles, you'll see the dots. If you put them in a frosted aluminum channel, the effect softens, but it never fully disappears.
When to choose which:
COB – under-cabinet lighting, glass cabinets, anywhere the strip is visible and you want a high-end look.
SMD – toe-kick lighting, above-cabinet accent lighting, or anywhere the strip is hidden from direct view.
And don't forget to check the CRI – for kitchens, 90 or above is a must for accurate color rendering.
Bottom line: If you hate those little light dots, go COB. It's worth the extra cost for the seamless finish. SMD is still a solid budget pick for hidden applications.
