hey! me again :) ended up deciding against stripping the finish on the boots since there's not a ton that remains to begin with, and just went in for a good clean, some neatsfoot oil, and then huberd's for good measure (which may have been overkill, i realize now. i just really wanted to handle them again 😆) they still look pretty old, but i'm happier with them now. just not sure what, if anything, to do next... i don't Feel done with them but that might just be me being overeager. here's how they're looking now, anyhow!

There’s no shame in knowing when a thing is “done,” even if it looks like it needs more work. Personally, I like gear with a little age to it - dings, nicks, scratches, flex lines. I like gear that wears its history, carries the bodies and stories that loved them before.

hi sen! i'm new to bootblacking and was just gifted some new equipment and a challenge by a friend. she just got a pair of beat-to-shit wildfire firefighters boots and handed them off to me to clean up. they're older and in worse shape than any other boots i've cleaned up before, and she's said she thinks i might need to strip the finish, which i've never done. i've got time and patience in spades, so i'm more than happy to take these on, but i'd love advice from someone more experienced before i start. how would you tackle this if you were in my shoes?
what i'm working with: fiebing's saddle soap and deglazer, huberd's shoe grease, dr jackson's neatsfoot oil, eco-flo super shene leather finish, and a horsehair buffing brush. considering grabbing a boar hair brush to clean with, but money is really tight right now, so if there's any chance that's not strictly necessary, that'd be awesome.

First off, props to you for taking this on, and double props for asking for tips and guidance. That’s what the bootblack spirit is all about!
To strip the finish, I like to use a graduate list of solvents:
Dial blue dish soap (breaks down polish at an amazing degree, can strip finish)
Minimum 70% isopropyl alcohol (anything less is too watered down, imo)
If that fails, pure acetone (strongest solvent, will dissolve finish quickly, so use sparingly)
I tend to clean first, just to make sure that what I’m stripping is finish and not just gunk, but ymmv.
After stripping, let them sit for a minimum 48 hours, better 72. This will allow the solvent to fully evaporate, ensuring you have a neutral surface.
Then comes the fun part - patching and filling. You can get premade paintable leather filler, for small dings and gashes, but you can also mix your own with leather dust and fabric glue. For larger tears, place a backing piece of leather inside, secure with fabric adhesive, and build your filler on top. Or, if you’re able, invest in FrankenPatch (you can find it on Etsy - most bootblacks I know that use it swear by it). Once your surface is even, a light sanding with a superfine grit sandpaper, to ensure everything is even.
Then dye, clean, and condition/polish as needed!
This is a multi-week project, so don’t rush yourself! Take your time, enjoy the process, and you’ll have em looking good as new!
