Results back from the lavatory: Success! It's not the most beautiful bangle ever made, but it has the desired sentiment. Grandpa's birth year on a bangle bracelet(1917). I silver soldered a 1917 walking liberty coin ring I split open onto a bangle made from a 2017 silver eagle dollar. Also pictured are a couple of my more successful attempts at soldering the knockouts onto rings. The scrap bin has the 'not so pretty' attempts, we'll call---> #learningopportunities. I can't wait for the next round of tool purchases, this will be soooo much easier! This....#Repost @pincusrob with @get_repost ăťăťăť Are you working on a relevant skill set for personal defense or just playing with cool toys and collecting training certificates? Shoot House Runs and Feats of Great Marksmanship can be fun, but you shouldnât be thinking more about âclearingâ your house than you are barricading your family and you probably wonât need that 50 yard headshot capability that your RDS equipped 4â CCW Pistol is capable of. âTrainingâ can be a fun hobby, but truly preparing for personal defense and developing the gear and skills related to practical security and safety usually isnât all that sexy. We talk about searching out true âLearning Opportunitiesâ, not just attending a bunch of classes. We talk about practicing the âfundamentalsâ and basics until they are automated. Find a contextually relevant Curriculum and purchase reliable gear. Train for the most likely events you could face, practice the skills involved and then, as you have extra resources (time, money, etc...), expand your preparation reasonably. Donât just focus on the things you enjoy and donât try to put the finest edge on your strongest skill set. Do the mundane work, study the boring material, own a second Same Gun instead of adding the latest model to your collection. Train and practice to Apply your skills in the way you will need them, not just perform them in isolation. Find Teachers and Coaches, not just instructors and demonstrators. And, remember, while it makes sense to be prepared, if you make good decisions and pay even a little bit of attention, youâre very unlikely to need the hard skills. For Alan Greenspan, it was cardboard boxes. For me, itâs dishes in the sink.
Just as cardboard boxes indicated to Mr. Greenspan what the future held for U.S. manufacturing, dishes indicate the level of personal responsibility in our office.
In our office kitchen, the dishwasher is to the left of the sink. Placing an item in the adjacent dishwasher takes less than 10 seconds. Having a sense of personal responsibility would dictate that one should put their own dish or glass into the dishwasher -- or so one would think. But, in an office environment, what is considered normal depends very much on the culture.
Last year, we renamed and rebranded the company. As part of the rebranding, we outlined our company values and we hoped that these values would help to achieve a greater sense of responsibility among the entire team -- responsibility that went beyond just the work of employees and extended to overall company performance and service to our clients.
We initiated a weekly coaching program that was rolled out for all staff over several months. During the weekly coaching session, there is a discussion of the core values. In addition to the coaching sessions, we have had company-wide discussions about employee empowerment, independent decision making and other strategies.
About this time, dishes were on my mind. Not all the time, but when I was in the kitchen I kept a mental note of what I saw in the sink. Dishes were still being left in the sink, not a ton of them, but still often enough to disappoint me. We were planning to expand the office and do a complete renovation, so I thought maybe that would create the sense of ownership.
Of course, I could have just called the team together and pointed out that the dishes needed to be put into the dishwasher, but then what are they hearing? Are they hearing the message that they need to think about how their action or inaction affects others?
For me itâs not really about the dishes, itâs the thought process that results in the dish being left in the sink. The person is leaving it for someone else to deal with and that is the concern. Therefore, I try to think about how I can instill an understanding in our team that they need to think beyond how something effects themselves and project on how it impacts others.
Maybe Iâm crazy to draw that connection -- to see a dish in the sink as indicating a lack of responsibility in peopleâs overall work behavior. That's very possible. Then again, I think that if they are putting their dishes in the sink, their thought process is working in a way that leads them to think about taking responsibility for the company and not just themselves.
After the expansion and renovation of the office was completed, we were into sixth month of the weekly coaching sessions and I began my mental notations at the sink once again. After several weeks, I noticed that the days without dishes vastly outnumbered those with them. There are slide backs to be sure, but now if there is a dish it is usually a coffee mug and not the pile that we had seen months ago.
It might not be the perfect indicator, but for me I think it works.
