Learning to kitesurf - Training with a small kite and short lines
For those willing to learn kitesurfing I would definately recommend this concept:
Take at least introduction lessons. At least a few hours. A was taught by a couple experienced friends.
Study the theory by watching good kitesurfing instructional videos. Personally I have found teching videos by progression very good.
Before trying to get on a board and learn to actually surf, train your basic kite flying skills with a small kite+short lines in shallow water or dry land.
The small kite and short lines generate less power and is much safer (it also feels safer allowing you to try more difficult things faster). Don't think a small kite will not have any force tho! At least I (90kg/200lbs) have been able to do all basic flying excercises with a small 5m^2 kite. Including body dragging in water in 10-15 knot winds!
So... Instead of buying a trainer kite I would recommend buying a small (5-6 m^2) actual LEI -kite which you can later use as a very strong wind kite (that is once you are more experienced). My small kite is a Switch Element with short lines (12 meter extensions as lines). More info here. The 12m lines can be found here. You naturally need a control bar as well + a harness. Get a seat harness as it stays down when training. I have personally opted for this one: Jay XX ABS which is mainly meant to be used as a waist harness, but can also be used with leg straps which is nice when training.Â
I'm keeping a "progression diary" at Facebook by the hashtag #learningkitesurfing
