Businesses were quick to latch onto the concept of the Minimal Viable Product (MVP), but too often, the phrase is used to cut corners and deliver the cheapest, quickest solution possible. They’re missing the point.

MVP should include MVUX.

A minimally viable user experience is an important part of any MVP, and you can’t forget the “V”. A minimal user experience doesn’t cut it. Too many product managers use the MVP as an excuse to neuter design efforts. They claim that spending time on research, iterative design of UI mockups, or production of prototypes takes too long. They claim that any effort to improve the user interface beyond merely functioning “isn’t MVP.”

The problem with this approach is that you deliver something that, while technically functional, is barely usable and certainly not desirable. It may not even meet the basic needs of the user. And all too often, a development team isn’t given the opportunity to make what are considered to be aesthetic, unnecessary improvements.

“Cut Your Design Sprint Time in Half” read the headline. Apparently, design sprints take too long. We can’t spend five entire days thinking about a problem and trying to solve it! Who has time for that? So why not just shorten all of the steps and get it done in half the time?

Am I the only one that has a problem with this mentality? Faster and shorter doesn’t necessarily mean better. Between Agile, Lean, and the other popular processes that are dominating software development these days, the design process is getting diced and spread awfully thin. The slow food movement was started to counteract the rise of fast food, preserving culture, traditions, and local, environmentally conscious sourcing. I’m starting to think we need a slow design movement that promotes forethought, deliberation, and time to develop understanding of a problem and the potential impacts of a proposed solution. I want less “move fast and break things.”

I’ve been doing a fair bit of research into how UX integrates with Agile teams. I’ve been reading books and articles, attending talks, and listening to podcasts. There are certainly variations, but there is a definite trend. Most teams that claim to be successfully working in an Agile development process are working ahead. There’s typically some amount of research up front followed by one design exercise or another to brainstorm and work through initial concepts. Then, designers are typically working at least one sprint ahead of development.
