‘Dear’ Prompts (Accepting)
I know we haven’t always had the best relationship. I will admit, there were times when I was young and foolish, and resented your choices. All I wanted was to be just like the other kids, and what you saw as love and protection, I saw as smothering. Now, as a father myself, I understand it so much more.
When you were my age, you were forced through hell. There was no safety to be had, even where it should have been. And for so many years, I was blind to this fact. I have learned a lot, over the years. From you and mum, from our family, and history. And often I find myself placing myself in your shoes, thinking of how I would have handled it. Even to this day, I have yet to find an answer. It is an impossible question, one I am very lucky to never face the reality of.
I guess, that I just want you to know, how much you mean to me. Despite all our fights, all the times I complained about being teased for our families past, the multitude of pestering about your past. All the secrets kept, and words misspoken. They cannot be taken back, cannot be changed. But after all that, still, know that I love you. For it would be a blessing to become as strong and amazing a man as the one who raised me.
