Student Grading
Here’s a fun little something to think about. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2002 that having other students grade assignments is allowed as the grades are not considered official records at that point and are not protected by FERPA. The Supreme Court did not make any decision on the question of whether the grades on individual student assignments, once they are turned in to teachers, are protected by FERPA.
I think the Supreme Court’s decision in this case was justified with the fact that no scores are technically official until they are entered into the grade book. However, this becomes an issue of personal exposure as the students are left open to criticism from other students. In my opinion, grades officially recorded in the grading system should receive confidentiality protection under FERPA and student-grading and announcing of scores to classmates should be left to individual district policy. Students should have the right to opt-out of any student-grading at any time.
