Two Birds, One Birdhouse
When Paulecrain found Grinnaux, it was not in the training hall with his axe, nor was it in his quarters getting shit-faced drunk. It was, however, in his quarters -- with a pile of small wooden boards, a few tools for cutting and carving the planks, a hammer and some nails. How or why he’d managed to procure these objects within the Vault’s grounds was beyond the half-blind lancer, though he’d hazard a guess that it had something to do with his uncle.
Ser Grinnaux de Dzemael paid little to no attention to his visitor when he entered, probably because he knew the only person with the gall to enter his room unannounced would be Paulecrain. He was quite preoccupied with whatever he was doing. At the moment, it happened to be placing a nail onto marked spots on two vertically aligned boards, then pounding it into place with the hammer, thus connecting the boards together. Once the nail was in as far as it would go, he made sure that the connection was sturdy and secure, then placed them carefully aside to pick up a new plank.
“The fuck’re you up to?” Finally Paulecrain asked, arms folding across his chest as he leaned back against the closed door.
Grinnaux regarded him with a grunt without missing a beat in his measuring. “You said she favors birds, aye? So I’m making the princess a birdhouse.”
Up quirked a brow at that. A birdhouse? Of course he knew immediately of whom the other spoke -- the single detail given made it almost too obvious. With a sigh and raising of his arms in a shrug, he shook his head, exasperated. “...You know she isn’t actually a princess, right?”
There was a pause as Grinnaux reached for the saw. Paulecrain could feel the eyeroll even with the other man’s back turned towards him. “Shut up.”
