Folks, I'm curious. At what level of language proficiency do you consider someone fluent in L2 (or L3, L4...) assuming L1 is a language spoken from birth? Answers based on the CEFR system for assessing language proficency:

If youâre wondering about what level your proficiency is in your target language, try looking up videos like â(A2/B1/B2/etc) speaking test/examâ on YouTube in your native language, and if you can express about the same things in your target language as the examee does in your native language, then you should be about that level.
Learning a language with a different alphabet to your native language
*according to google translate, this is âyou can do it!â in Russian. I make no illusions about my actual ability to speak Russian (but I did learn the script! Hence the post!), I just cannot resist a poorly translated Russian cat meme.Â
Anyway, now that I have your attention:Â
Learning a different alphabetÂ
1) Friendship Ended with Duolingo, Memrise is my Best Friend Now. Memrise is such an incredible resource for all language learning, so many native speakers post resources and itâs endlessly more effective than Duo. Their method of refreshing your memory and learning new material in small chunks- ugh their mind. Seriously, please do try it, itâs so quick and simple and you can use it for just about anything.Â
2) Donât just try to learn the script by eye, you absolutely have to be writing it out it (a lot. Lots and lots of practice writing the same fucking letter. It should feel a little tedious and maddening). However, itâs really important that you form the letters correctly or theyâll look messy and strange to native speakers when you write - I like to watch youtube videos of people writing out the letters, pause them lots, and form the letters as I watch them do it. Your memory will also be aided by repeating the letter after them out loud - this will help improve your pronunciation (pronouncing letters are hard! Have you ever really listened to how French people say âuâ!?)Â
3) Consistency is key. You donât have to learn new material every day, in fact I would advise that you donât, but you should try to write out the letters youâve already learnt, or even just quickly do a refresh on memrise. Make a commitment, ladies! Try to write out as much as you can remember without looking when you first sit down each day, then check and make any adjustments needed!
4) Remember that you are absolutely capable of it! Itâs easy to feel hopeless, or like itâs impossible. You can take the tough love approach (âpeople all over the world learn your alphabet just fine you entitled English bastardâ - sometimes the inner Scot jumps out). Or you can remember that once upon a time you had to sit and learn the English alphabet, and probably felt the same way. I have a very early memory of sitting on my mumâs lap and drawing wobbly oâs on a piece of paper while she helped me hold the pencil. Nothing is inherent, these are all just things your mind is more than capable of learning.Â
5) Try to find simple words that you can write out, so you can practise using the alphabet right away, in context. Like how little English speaking kids will write out âcabâ as soon as they learn ABC, all these things help consolidate your memory.Â
**BONUS TIP** Try to avoid relating everything back to your first language. Youâll learn faster if youâre not thinking âthis sound is the same as the English sound __â, âthis letter resembles this one in Englishâ - itâs not a helpful way to learn! A language is distinct in itself, that way of thinking will make you see the language as English but in a code.Â
