two reasons to win, versus two reasons to live

lance cares about his friends. lance loves his friends. this is just a truth about his character. but the distinction between what i would consider his two closest friends is certainly significant.

lance wants to win for mash. or, rather, he refuses to lose because of mash. because of an explicit promise he made to mash that he wouldn’t lose.

lance wants to live for dot. however, he doesn’t refuse to die for dot. and this is not for any verbalized reason, either. he took that hit not knowing he’d survive it. he just knew dot wouldn’t. he doesn’t want to live for dot for dot’s sake. he refuses to live without dot.

and that right there is the difference. mash is a matter of friendship and a promise. dot is a matter of life and death.
