The lifespan of a human is relatively brief compared to the world around us. We spend the majority of our lives knowing this, are achingly aware of it as we draw sharp breaths that plunge through our lungs, know it on every tick of our omnipresent, whirling clocks. We are always distantly cognizant of the limited amount of time we have on this earth. This phenomenon, paired with our natural desire to survive, has led many humans to dream of and think on and masochistically ponder immortality. Though we do not all thirst after it as the villains in our media do, most at least consider it: what it would be to have our one absolute surety, the inevitability of death, clipped away like so many unwanted branches. Immortality in thousands of different shapes and forms peppers our novels, our lore, our films, and our theater. Outside of the fantastical context in which immortal life is often placed, immortality is present as the driving force behind the common human desire to be remembered, to create a legacy, to leave some proof of existence behind on the earth when our souls no longer inhabit our bodies. Monuments are erected, buildings inscribed with faded monikers, all in the ultimate interest of preserving our memory so that in some capacity we may extend our lifespans beyond what is offered by our fragile bodies.

What we rarely consider is that our possessions, the things we wear and use every day, however small, will likely remain long after we are gone: still carrying and exuding our very spirit. Our energy is woven through the threads of garments, trapped and creased into thick, dusty folds. Wearing vintage clothing or materials allows that energy to once again sprout and soar and animate the earth. The wearer carries the energy with them and combines it with their own- it bolsters their spirit. And through this practice we string together our souls, linking our lifetimes and creating a quasi-immortality that is fresher and more vibrant that the cold monotony of staid marble. Our lives are lived in the context of all those who have created and touched and lived in the fabrics we wear; the material becomes a collective lens through which multiple diverse spectrums are experienced. Our memory becomes food for many glorious trees to grow forth, and through them, we are able to continue to nurture and add energy to the earth, though our spirit may no longer animate our bodies. Heritage and history add presence and relevance, especially when expressed in conjunction with elements that are current and new. Wearing clothing with a history beyond ourselves is shading shadows into pictures to make them fuller, is adding context to a story that allows a deeper meaning to be fully expressed. We can wear history; we can inhabit heritage. Through clothing made out of vintage, antique and ethnographic textiles, we can appear aesthetically to fit into a different era and that retrospective picture perfectly. We can be timeless; we can be ageless. We can transcend the impermanence of current, we can fold ourselves in clothing that whispers to us the secrets that allowed it to survive, the mystical elements that preserved it, the crystal qualities that imbue it with an essence that is enduringly current. Vintage garments can serve as our shield from transience, our aegis from ephemerality.
