03/05/21 - Lajitas, TX - THE PAYOFF - My favorite hiking trails are the ones that come with a payoff. I remember being frustrated at times on the Appalachian Trail after spending a couple of hours hiking to the top of a mountain only to find it so shrouded with tree cover or fog that there was nothing to see: in other words, no payoff. Not so after our hike to the local viewpoint this morning: we were rewarded with this stunning view of the Rio Grande flowing through an arid land on a blue sky day. Life is good.

My time in Big Bend is coming to a close. I swing my leg over Rusty’s saddle and get ready to embark into the Lajitas mountains for the final sunset of 2017. I strike up a friendly conversation with the girl that is leading us along the trail. She is much younger than I am, yet I am attracted to her outdoor lifestyle and free spirit. For a moment I think that she may feel the same way about me.
