Cегодня я довольна как слон, а всё потому, что я-таки попала в кино на «Леди в фургоне» с Мегги Смит. Было смешно, необычно и интересно. Это фильм о внутренних переживаниях человека, которого гложет чувство вины. Ведь самые суровые приговоры мы подписываем себе сами. Если человек не считает себя виноватым, ни одни суд в мире не заставит его искренне раскаяться. Если же человек считает себя виновным, ни один рациональный аргумент не убедит его в обратном. Маргарет в течение многих лет претворяет в жизнь свой приговор, который сама себя вынесла, пытаясь вымолить прощение. Она заперла себя в тюрьму – в маленький фургончик, она провоцирует людей, отталкивая их от себя, как будто считает, что не имеет права быть счастливой после содеянного. Всё это – следствие чувства вины, которое, как болезнь, медленно и болезненно разрушает героиню изнутри. Особый шарм фильму придаёт музыка. Дело в том, что таинственная главная героиня прекрасно играет на фортепиано, но лишает себя возможности даже слушать музыку – это один из пунктов жестокого приговора. «Музыка жила в кончиках моих пальцев» - признается она своему единственному другу (?) писателю Алану Беннетту. Оказавшись одна в комнате с инструментом, она не может устоять перед искушением и начинает играть одно из произведений Шопена. Когда ты в одиночестве играешь на фортепиано, это всегда в некотором смысле откровение: инструмент становится проводником: эмоции перетекают через кончики пальцев, впитываются клавишами и трансформируются в звуки, выбиваемые молоточками из струн. Это была исповедь мисс Шепард. Она предпринимает попытку простить себя – смягчить приговор. Вернувшись в фургончик, она просит Алана дать ей руку, уверяя, что она чистая, но дело не в гигиене, Маргарет освобождается от чувства вины и разрешает себе почувствовать присутствие рядом небезразличного человека. Это фильм о том, что такое настоящая доброта, и как она может сочетаться с отвращением о том, как злорадство и безразличие шифруются под добродетель, о страхе жить и о прощении. #ladyinthevan

The Lady in The Van - what did I think ? Having this excellently performed by the Hull Truck Theatre Company on stage at the Lowry a couple of years of go, I was made up to see that a film was being made of this Alan Bennett play and thought that the casting of The excellent Maggie Smith as Miss Shepherd (the afore mentioned lady in the van) was genius . So I went to watch it on cold Monday afternoon at the local Cineworld. Think I brought the average audience age down by about 20 years ! The film is based on the true story that happened to the Playwright Alan Bennett. He bought a house in 1970's Camden in London and as neighbours worried about a cantankerous homeless old lady who lived in a van there houses, Alan invited her to stay on his a driveway for a few months whilst she "got sorted". Instead of accepting the offer with gratitude and thanks the grumpy Miss Shepherd makes out she is doing him the favour by accepting and this is the basis of their relationship - she in fact stayed for 15 years ! The story is told via narration from Alan Bennett, brilliantly played by Alex Jennings . There are in fact two 'Alan's' Alan the playwright who is writing the play and Alan the man and the conversations they have with each other are touching, thoughtful and really help you get into the head of the author .. The film is gently, numerous entertaining and touching . The respect that Alan shows Miss Shepherd is touching , never once did he probe into her circumstances, he treated her with respect and dignity whilst at the same time clearing up the mess (literally !) she left in her wake with a resigned acceptance During the film, Alan learns about Mary's past, that she had been a nun am esteemed concert pianist and an ambulance driver in the war. Posthumously he finds out that she was also on the run from the police for a hit and run accident which resulted in the death of a teenage motorcyclist , which was not her fault . This role could have been written for Maggie Smith, she plays the indignant, somewhat refined, grumpy vulnerable at times and challenging old women with humour, dryness and a killer library of witty one liners. There are also interesting comparisons between the relationship of Alan and His ageing mother and his relationship with Miss Shepherd which are both poignant and touching . One of the highlights was seeing the way after initial apprehension and polite hostility the well heeled residents of the street took to Miss Shepherd and how she became as much of a member of the community as they were The film is beautifully shot, it was actually filmed in the exact house where the events took place. The only slight thing that put a damper on it for me was having seen the play, which I thought explored the relationship between the two main characters in more detail - the film didn't quite have that But the flip side was that you get to know more about Miss Shepherds back story .It was a fabulous way to spend an afternoon. a heartwarming, thought provoking gentle film with great acting !
