“How do you know?” Ashitaka asks before he can think about the question, like how saplings must bow to rough wind or wooden stakes as they grow, “How do you know it is arrogance, that it is human?” San snarls. “Because humans always need to leave their mark.” He thinks of answering to Princess Mononoke and charging Irontown with a spear of bone and trying to stab Lady Eboshi’s warm, beating heart. He thinks of the stream of cold, salty tears falling down her cheeks when she was faced with becoming a demon. He thinks of Nago’s promise after he was freed from the demon’s flesh. It was his own honest pride. His own selfish loss. His own hatred.

Lady Eboshi is one of the most complex characters in Princess Mononoke. She isn’t a traditional villain, but she also isn’t a hero. She exists in the uncomfortable space between progress and destruction.
As the leader of Irontown, Eboshi represents human ambition and survival. She builds a place where outcasts are protected lepers are given dignity and work, and former brothel workers are treated with respect and independence. In a world that discards people easily, Eboshi chooses to take responsibility for them.
At the same time, her vision comes at a cost. Her industrial expansion directly harms the forest and its gods, and she is willing to destroy nature if it means securing safety and prosperity for her people. Eboshi doesn’t act out of cruelty she acts out of certainty. She believes progress is necessary, even if it makes her an enemy.
What makes Lady Eboshi so compelling is that the story never fully condemns or glorifies her. She is compassionate and ruthless, visionary and destructive, caring and dangerously confident. She is a reminder that good intentions do not always lead to good outcomes — and that leadership often requires choices that cannot be clean or moral in every direction.
Lady Eboshi isn’t evil. She’s human. And that’s what makes her unforgettable.
