I have always loved movies about music. Musicals, documentaries, jukebox musicals, biopics, dramas, concert films... All of them. And this one, based on the true story of Ritchie Valens, I loved it. The movie, La Bamba, named after his most famous song, where he had turned the classic folklore song into a Latin rock song, basically starting that genre in 1958. The movie goes over his upbringing, how his father left, and how his older brother wasn't a good man. The movie was a beautiful piece of art based off his life, and showed how deep his love for his family was. It's so sad how he died, but there was also mass irony in my opinion. It was the first coin flip he had won, but the loser was the one that go to keep their life. I bet if he knew what would happen, he wouldn't have gotten on that plain. And, also the fact he died the same way he feared most made me cry like a baby. He died the same way he never wanted to - The same way his best friend died. The movie showed how he loved for his mom and even his ex-girlfriend who even cheated on him with his older brother. Him and his brother in the movie really did try to love each other, but I understand where his older brother's jealousy came from. As someone who has seen their younger siblings glorified for everything they do, I understand his emotions, but that doesn't justify them. Ritchie Valens made covers and created beautiful love songs, and I listen to them quite often. The movie was great, I ended up crying at the end (I was a complete mess), but introduced me to things I now love. I would recommend it to people who also love movies about music.
