It’s just really sad. I feel for Kyra (and also Kassandra). But I know Kassandra dying was really the only viable option here for Kyra to truly be able to heal. Although, I am curious if Kassandra never died, what do you think their future would’ve looked like?

Anyway, I wanted to pick your brain about Kassandra’s death. I’m fairly certain she intentionally chose to end her life fighting those pirates. But when did she make this choice exactly? She left Kyra a note before they left but I feel like this must’ve been on her mind for a while. It’s not something you decide randomly. There were indications Kassandra wanted to die (asking Kyra to slice her throat, etc) but I feel like they were settling into a routine that maybe could have changed Kassandra’s perspective. Did she perhaps consider how her death may impact Kyra now that they were becoming somewhat friends?

Anyway I really love this story. When I finished part 1 I couldn’t believe there were another 2 parts to go. It felt like we were there with Kyra every day during those 4 years.

I too have thought about what an alternate story might look like if Kassandra had not chosen to take the path that she did. I think that eventually Kyra could have reached a place where she could be friendly, even warm, to Kassandra, but I don't think she would ever be truly comfortable with having Kassandra in close, constant proximity (i.e. living with her). But a Kassandra who was roaming around the world doing good deeds and trying to atone for her actions would be welcome to visit anytime.

I've been asked if I think there could ever be a version of this premise where Kassandra and Kyra end up in a real relationship, and I firmly believe the answer is no. That ship has already been torpedoed and sunk to the bottom of the sea by the end of the first sentence of the first chapter. I'm the kind of person (and writer) who needs a certain level of emotional realism in my fiction, and to me, the terrible things Deimos!Kassandra does to Kyra are simply too much for any sort of truly loving relationship to take root.

So could they be friends? Possibly yes if Kassandra and Kyra do a lot of work on themselves. Lovers? No.
