Being the unplanned child of a Brightvale noble couple, Edmond’s life was already stacked against him. Throughout his early childhood, he received no genuine love, only stone-hard discipline, and cold praise when he followed through with it. He was given his namesake, Edmond, meaning “wealthy protector,” because his parents wanted to make sure their reputation was protected. While they taught him all he needed to know about how to behave and how to act in certain situations, they weren’t kind whenever Edmond failed. If he picked up the wrong silverware, his hand got smacked with a ruler; if he sang off-tune, he’d get yelled at; if his grades slipped during his tutoring, he’d be denied food. His older brother wasn’t any better. While their parents were focusing on “perfecting” Edmond, his brother grew resentful after losing the attention he got. As a result, Edmond’s older brother made it his mission to make him miserable in every way. The only solace Edmond had in his suffering was his comics, his favorite being Tale of Woe. When the Battle Faerie, Aethia, was looking for young Neopians to train into heroes after the Void Incident, Edmond was accepted along with his brother. Unfortunately, Edmond, despite his determination, kept failing Aethia’s lessons. His training weapons would break mid-match, he’d fall all over himself during hand-to-hand combat, he even mysteriously failed to determine his Magical Affinity. Despite all this, Edmond had made a small group of friends who cheered him on. At least, he thought they were his friends until his BEST friend stole the money he saved for a Royal Paintbrush. During the confrontation, Edmond was held down by the others who he believed were his friends as his once-best friend took a Grey Paintbrush and used it on him. Hurt, humiliated, and betrayed, Edmond dropped out and ran away that day. For two years, he spent his life on the streets, trying to scrounge up what he could for his next meal, or even getting up as early as possible for the soup line. It was a miserable existence, and Edmond wanted to scream, to lash out, to return the hurt dealt to him. Still, he knew better, he knew what happened to those who went down such a path, and he knew he’d be hurting innocent people if he did. So, Edmond bottled up his frustrations in order to keep himself from hurting others, and continued to show kindness despite the world he knew refusing to show the same. It wasn’t until he was on the verge of starvation and saved a certain faerie that Edmond’s life would finally change for the better.
