Habari gani? Kwanzaa is our cultural homecoming.  Created in 1966 by scholar-activist Dr. Maulana Karenga as a weeklong celebration born as a cultural anchor for African Americans seeking to reconnect with ancestral traditions and affirm community values in the face of systemic erasure.  The name comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” “first fruits.” Kwanzaa echoes age-old harvest celebrations across the African continent. Each of its seven days is dedicated to one of the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles): unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.  These principles serve as values to guide how we live, build, and care for one another. In lighting the candles of the kinara, we honor our ancestors not just in memory, but through intentional action.  Kwanzaa is both rooting and re-routing. Grounding us in a shared past and lighting a path toward collective flourishing. Happy Kwanzaa!
