I’m watching Kwaidan and it’s making me think about feminine horror. Fem horror is the US is a mostly unattractive old women or crazy fem killers.
Kwaidan, more specifically The Woman of The Snow shows her femininity very differently than anything I’ve seen. She is ethereal, but not a ruthless killer. She is incredibly attractive and becomes the samurai’s wife, even having kids. She is never dehumanized or objectified. And she retains her femininity even when her true identity is shown. And she is still the antagonist of a horror movie.
I think that’s really cool.
