Were the Death Paintings stillborn? I think it was mentioned that Kamo impregnated the mother 9 times and aborted the pregnancy 9 times. I think her pain is also a contributing factor to the Death Paintings' hatred for Kamo and them being such strong curses.
The word here, 堕胎 (datai) can mean "abortion" or "miscarriage". Whether that Kenjaku aborted the babies or not, as we see in the states of the Kusouzu, none of them had developed fully into a proper, healthy fetus, and the mother could never deliver a full pregnancy. And such, it makes them a stillborn - which resulted in them sealed as cursed objects.

Saifukuji Temple, Empress-Consort Danrin's Nine Forms Drawing (檀林皇后九相図)
So! To celebrate the day, here have a classic example of the kusōzu (九相図), which has inspired so many dubious gore porn and porn porn pieces!
The "nine forms of the corpse" meditation related to general sorts of contemplation of the corpse, which according to medieval Buddhist tales was both (1) somewhat dubious (the monk doing it usually gets followed or scolded for his odd behavior, and perhaps suspect morals, particularly when it's a female body being contemplated—particularly when there's some flesh still on the bones, as it were) and (2) wonderfully effective for getting closer to enlightenment and the powers over reality that thus followed.
