This AU meet-cute is inspired by the results of a BuzzFeed quiz I took yesterday, of all things. Iāll put the full text after the fic, so it doesnāt spoil the surprise.
~850 words, PG, the cotton-candiest of fluffs.
Blaine liked to think he wasnāt generally obnoxious in public. Sure, he performed in the occasional flash mob, but those were staged events - he wasnāt one of those people who spoke at top volume wherever he went, regardless of atmosphere. He tried not to take up too much space on public transport. He even made sure his whole group shuffled off to side if they needed to have a conversation on a walkway somewhere so people could get around them.
Of course, all of those considerations got shot to hell whenever he opened Snapchat.
āSam, oh my God,ā Blaine said to his phone one morning. He had just received the most ridiculous looking selfie possible of his best friend, startling him so much that he almost choked on the sip of coffee heād taken from his travel mug. āWhy?ā
Blaine double-tapped the screen to reply and started maneuvering as subtly as possible to find a good angle without making it too apparent that he was taking a selfie in public. He was so preoccupied with finding a good angle that would minimize the shine from his hair gel that he forgot to look where he was going, causing more than one person to grumble curse words at him as they dodged out of his way at the last minute.
āSorry, sorry, I - mmph!ā
Blaineās frantic apologies to the people around him were cut off unexpectedly by another pair of lips running into his own and two phones clattering to the ground. He stepped back as soon as he could regain control of some higher brain function, wrapping his hands around the other personās (very well-toned, holy crap) upper arms when he felt their body start to lose balance.
āThanks,ā the man said, flushed bright pink but smiling down at Blaine.
āUh - youāre welcome,ā Blaine said, temporarily forgetting English at the sight of the manās gorgeous face. āI mean, weāve already gotten to first base, so I suppose itās the least I can do, right?ā
The man laughed, sending Blaineās pulse soaring. āAnd they say chivalry is dead.ā He bent down and scooped up their phones, handing Blaineās back to him and asking, āThat still work?ā
Blaine tapped the home button and smiled when the screen lit up normally, noticing a slight crack along the bottom but nothing that would make it unusable. āItās a little dinged up, but itās not a problem. Yours?ā
āIām going to need a new case, but the phone itself is fine,ā the man said, flashing a scuffed skull-print case. āThankfully.ā
āOoh, thatās unfortunate, though. Your case now is so McQueen-esque,ā Blaine said, frowning sympathetically. āOr is it really McQueen? I donāt really shop there myself, clearly, so I donāt know what their accessory range is like.ā
āJust an homage, but nice eye,ā the man said, smiling appreciatively. āIām Kurt.ā
āBlaine.ā He stuck out his hand to shake Kurtās, hoping he suppressed the shiver that ran up his spine as they made contact. āAnd, uh, sorry about earlier.ā
āWhat? No, it was my fault,ā Kurt said, confused. āI was busy trying to take a flattering selfie for Snapchat and totally wasnāt looking where I was going.ā
āDitto,ā Blaine said sheepishly. āGlad to know I wasnāt alone there.ā
āYou were having trouble finding a good angle? Seriously?ā Kurt asked before blushing a deep red. āPlease tell me I didnāt just say that out loud.ā
āIf it helps, I had the same thought about you,ā Blaine offered, rubbing Kurtās arm gently right above the elbow.
āFunnily enough, it does help,ā Kurt said, getting a sly grin on his face. āBecause now I feel more willing to ask if you might like to have dinner with me tomorrow. We can discuss selfie poses or something.ā
āIād like to think I have more than that in my conversational arsenal, but yes,ā Blaine said, smiling broadly. āI would love to.ā
āGreat!ā Kurt said, bouncing gently on his toes and looking far too damn cute for Blaine to handle. āHere.ā
They traded phones and put in their numbers before sharing a somewhat reluctant goodbye, as Blaine needed to get to the bus shelter and Kurt was close to missing his train. Blaine couldnāt help but send a quick snapshot of himself to Kurt once he was seated, though, with the caption Is this angle flattering enough? ;)
It would look better with me there. ;)
Maybe we can take one tomorrow night. Seems like this whole thing started because of selfies, you know.
Fine, but with one caveat: it has to be good enough for Instagram.
Thatās a lot to live up to.
I think we can do it.
____________________
Kurtās prophecy was spot-on: they uploaded photos of their date that were a hit among their friends, who all called the pics the cutest things theyād ever seen.
Or, well, Ā they did for a year or so, until Blaine decided to pop the question by reenacting their first meeting with a far more intentional kiss and a drop to one knee. The photos of that moment were impossible to beat.

Based off my own terrible fire drill last night, except I didnāt meet the love of my life while freezing my ass off in a swimsuit coverup. :(
~950 words, PG-13 for cursing/drug references.
Finally, Kurt thought, stepping into the hot, wonderful spray of his private dorm shower. God, itās been a long day.
He started humming snippets of songs quietly as he lathered up, happy and relaxed now that he could officially call his busy day over. Two group project meetings, a rehearsal, and a quick shift at the diner had been making him frazzled and irritable, but the delicious smell of his body wash and the pleasure-pain feeling of his just barely too hot water was soothing him.
As he was rinsing out his conditioner, he perked up, remembering that he had a leftover slice of cheesecake waiting for him in the fridge once he finished his moisturizing routine and pulled on his comfiest pajamas. He was so close to having everything he needed for a lazy night in.
So of course, the fire alarm had to go off just then.
āAre you fucking kidding me?ā Kurt asked, frozen in disbelief. āThis has to happen now?ā
He ran his towel over his body once before shrugging into his plush bathrobe and throwing on some flip flops. Dorm keys firmly in hand, he started joining his fellow residents in a mass exodus, feeling his hair drip down his forehead with every step.
None of his roommates were nearby, so Kurt moved off to the side once he was outdoors and out of the ādanger zone,ā arms folded over his chest in displeasure. A few other residents gave him sympathetic looks, but he just glared back, his earlier grumpiness coming back in full force at his predicament, and they all turned away quickly.
One boy, however, was not so easily deterred.
āYou too, huh?ā he asked, coming to stand next to Kurt in the pool of light from the parking garage across the street from their dorm. The bright fluorescents made the beads of water clinging to his face and neck starkly apparent, and Kurt cracked a slightly grudging smile.
āCould they have picked a worse moment?ā Kurt replied, trying not to stare at the droplets hanging on the other manās jaw.
āSomething tells me this wasnāt a planned drill,ā the man said, gesturing to the cluster of confused-looking RAs near the main entrance.
āSomeone was just trying to hotbox?ā Kurt asked, anger rekindling yet again. āOh my God, I thought there was a minimum GPA requirement to get into this school, how did someone who canāt even figure out how to smoke competently get in?ā
āIt couldāve just been a cooking mishap,ā the man said, tone much pleasanter than Kurtās. āYou never know.ā
āIām sorry, have you met some of the people who live in this building? It was a stoner,ā Kurt said, shooting the other man a judgmental look.
āI actually havenāt really gotten the chance to talk to anyone but my roommates yet,ā the man said, unfazed. āIāve been so busy with classes and extracurriculars that I havenāt been around the dorm much. My nameās Blaine!ā
āKurt.ā
āKurt,ā Blaine repeated, smiling up at him. āCare to tell me more about yourself, Kurt?ā
āMusical theatre junior. You?ā
āVocal performance sophomore, but Iām considering a minor in acting,ā Blaine said. āWeāre kind of on the same path, Iām surprised we havenāt seen each other before.ā
āI donāt do extracurriculars here,ā Kurt explained. āIāve got a job and an internship, so that eats up all my free time. What do you do?ā
āIām in the student-run theatre group!ā Blaine said, an excited sparkle lighting up his pretty hazel eyes. āWeāre having a meeting tomorrow to decide what show we want to put on this semester. Hopefully itāll be just as fun as Sweeney Todd was last semester.ā
āOh my God, you were in that? I went to go see it with my friend Rachel and we were both swooning over the staging,ā Kurt said. He clasped his hands together in front of his chest and begged, āTell me everything about what it was like!ā
Blaine eagerly launched into a recap of the drama behind the drama, answering any questions Kurt had and engrossing him so much that he didnāt even notice when everyone started heading back inside after the all-clear. What he did notice, however, was Blaineās warm hand coming up to touch his arm.
āHey, I think we can go back in,ā he said, nodding toward the door.
āOh! Wow, that was a quick fire drill,ā Kurt said, surprised.
āIām not complaining,ā Blaine said, making Kurtās heart plummet momentarily until he continued, āI think my feet are going numb.ā
āFuck, it is cold,ā Kurt said, suddenly aware that the late September weather was not conducive to being soaking wet outside at night. āI might have to forego my dessert for some hot chocolate. Would you...care to join me?ā
āReally?ā Blaine asked, a shy smile spreading across his face.
āI was really enjoying our conversation,ā Kurt said, returning the smile. āAnd, you know, the whole point of living in the dorms is to meet new people.ā
āI suppose youāve got a point. Give me a minute to throw on some real clothes and Iāll meet you at your place? Where do you live?ā
āIām in 206,ā Kurt said. āYou?ā
āIām down in 222, conveniently enough,ā Blaine replied. āI guess that means we can walk back up together.ā
āI could be okay with that,ā Kurt said, and they began the trek back inside, not noticing that they were somehow holding hands until they had to turn opposite directions to reach their respective rooms from the stairwell door. āOh God, I didnāt-ā
āMe either,ā Blaine said, talking over Kurt a little. āBut Iām not mad.ā
āMe either,ā Kurt said, smiling tentatively at Blaine.
Based off this AU idea: Weāre the only two people in the DMV and weāre filling out papers silently when you look over and ask me what colour eyes I think you have
~985 words, PG.
Blaine sighed as he started filling out the form the DMV lady had given him, already tired of dealing with bureaucracy even though he was one of two customers currently in the building - showing up right after they opened was a surprisingly good idea. The other man was in the chair/desk combination to his left, already busily writing down answers as Blaine approached the desk and asked for a driverās license application.
Focus, Anderson, he told himself, actually taking in the information being requested instead of just blindly putting in answers. Youād hate to misspell your own name on an official government document. Shit, could I be arrested for falsifying my identity if I have a misspelled driverās license? Would it still be a valid form of ID?
āHey,ā the other man said quietly, breaking Blaine out of his increasingly absurd thought spiral. āCan I ask you a potentially weird question?ā
āAre you trying to sell me drugs while weāre literally sitting in a government facility?ā Blaine asked, leaning as far away as his tiny, unbalanced chair/desk would allow. He was mostly certain that a man this pretty wouldnāt be a drug mule, but he was still on edge after his panicked train of thought and had seen a few too many Lifetime movies recently to be completely trusting.
āWh- no,ā the man said, brows furrowed in an expression Blaine could only classify as ājudgmental confusion.ā āItās about my eye color.ā
āHuh?ā Blaine said, ever eloquent.
āI never know how to answer that question,ā the man explained. āAnd Iām kind of perpetually afraid of being arrested for identity theft if a cop thinks my eye color doesnāt match what my license says.ā
āSo youād like me toā¦?ā
āLook at my eyes and tell me what color you think they are?ā the man said, wincing away slightly. āI know, itās a little weird, feel free to say no if itās too much!ā
āNo, I donāt mind,ā Blaine said easily. āI mean, itās not a question I tend to expect, but in the grand scheme of things, this cannot possibly be the weirdest question Iāll ever be asked.ā
āThank you,ā the man said, visibly relieved. āUh, here, let me get a little closer to the window.ā
He got up and walked across the office to the row of windows that lined the front, giving Blaine a full view of his muscular yet slim body for the first time.
Blaine had to swallow hard before moving to follow him.
āOh, Iām Kurt, by the way,ā the other man - Kurt - said once Blaine was closer. āJust thought you should learn my name before we gaze tenderly into each otherās eyes.ā
Blaine snorted gently before saying his own name, earning a stunning smile from Kurt. āYou ready?ā
āLay it on me,ā Kurt said teasingly. He stood still by the window, about an armās length from Blaine, giving him a perfect view of his eyes.
Blaine suddenly understood why Kurt could never pin down an eye color.
At first glance, Kurtās eyes were blue, rivaling the sunny sky outside in intensity. As Blaine looked closer, however, he saw swirls of green near Kurtās pupils, rings of gray along the outside rim of the irises, and even a couple tiny flecks of gold that drew Blaineās own eyes upwards to the echoing subtle highlights in Kurtās brunet coif.
He couldnāt help but scan over the rest of Kurtās face at that, noting barely-there freckles smattered along his nose and cheeks before zeroing in on his loosely pursed pink lips.
They stood there staring at each other for God only knew how long before the sound of an employee dropping her stapler on the ground and cursing vigorously snapped them out of their haze.
āWow,ā Blaine said softly, unable to help himself.
Kurt sucked in a shaky breath, looking faintly rattled. āDid you manage to decide on a color?ā
āUm, my first impression was blue,ā Blaine said, trying to figure out how to put Kurtās eyes into words. āBut there was also green and gray and even gold - Iām not surprised youāve never been able to know for sure what answer to put down.ā
āYou saw gold in my eyes?ā Kurt asked. āFunny, thatās the overwhelming impression I got from yours.ā
āYou thought my eyes were multicolored? Iāve always thought they were a pretty basic hazel,ā Blaine said, surprised.
āBasic? Hardly,ā Kurt said. āI felt like I kept seeing the colors shift every time you switched focus.ā
āWould you maybe like to continue monitoring each otherās eye colors over dinner some time?ā Blaine said rapidly, almost unaware of what he was doing. He didnāt want to assume there was a connection when there wasnāt - not after the Gap Attack, as his high school buddies called his most embarrassing moment - but something about Kurt made him want to learn more, and he couldnāt let that desire go unexplored.
Kurtās eyes widened for an instant before he replied, āYes. Yes, that sounds wonderful, Blaine.ā
āReally? I mean, great, that sounds great, when are you free?ā Blaine said, hoping he didnāt sound overeager.
āI was planning on grabbing brunch after getting my license changed over, if youād care to join me,ā Kurt said. His voice was shy, but his eyes sparkled with hope, distracting Blaine all over again.
āBrunch would be lovely,ā Blaine said, coming back to himself. āUm, why are you getting your license changed?ā
āI just moved here from Ohio for school,ā Kurt said. āNow that I have a permanent address in Bushwick, I needed to get my license updated.ā
āYouāre from Ohio?ā Blaine repeated. āIām from Ohio. Iām starting college too.ā
āYouāre kidding,ā Kurt said, looking surprised yet pleased. āHow much more can we have in common?ā
As it turned out, quite a lot, which made planning their wedding a year later a breeze.
au based off this post in which kurt and blaine have been best friends all their lives and now live as roommates in the nyc loft together (minus rachel). smut then a little bit of fluff. ~1.4k, NC-17
āKurt, oh my God--ā
Blaine squeals as Kurtās long fingers attack his sides, falling onto his ass on the bed and squirming away from his best friend.
āYou challenge me, Anderson, you get your ass whooped.ā
Blaine bounces backwards away from him, trying to escape Kurtās hands, but Kurt follows him onto the bed, hair flopping onto his forehead with a wide grin. Blaine laughs, grabbing a pillow and whacking Kurtās shoulder with it, but Kurt easily wrestles it off him and throws it on the floor.
āNo playing dirty,ā he threatens, swinging a knee over Blaineās wriggling legs and pinning them down, āor youāll see what my fingers can really do.ā
Blaine huffs out a laugh, but for a second thereās a charged moment between them, neither missing the undertone of what those words could really mean. Then Blaine giggles and tries to wriggle away again, shoving at Kurtās thigh in an effort to throw him off.
Kurt raises an eyebrow dangerously and grabs Blaineās wrist, smirking as he plants it on the sheets beside Blaineās head. He tries to writhe away, but Kurtās got him pinned down too hard, biting his lip with a teasing smile as the fingers of his other hand continue to dance down Blaineās ribcage.
āAaah, Kurt!ā Blaine laughs, swatting at his hand, but then Kurt grabs that one too, pushing it down onto the bed on the other side of his head.
Blaine stops wriggling, his heartbeat speeding up. Kurt is propped up directly over him, straddling his thighs, chest still heaving from the effort of their tickle fight. He catches Blaineās gaze and smirks at him. āYou asked for it, Anderson.ā
Bringing Blaineās wrists together above his head and holding them down with just one hand, Kurt slides a palm down Blaineās side, fingers digging in lightly--and that doesnāt feel so ticklish anymore, no, now itās making Blaine aware of whereās he feeling rather alert in other places. He grabs the bottom of Blaineās shirt, rucking it up his chest all the way to his shoulders.
Blaine can feel his breath coming fast, his fingers stilled where they had been twitching in Kurtās hand. Then Kurt meets his eye, gives him a wicked grin, and leans down to blow a huge raspberry on Blaineās chest.
Blaine shrieks, kicking his feet, but Kurt holds him down well, blowing another right over his sternum, making Blaine start wriggling and squirming again. He can see Kurt smiling against his stomach as he works his way down, blowing raspberries all over his tummy, planting a huge one right over his happy trail--oh God--
Suddenly Kurt stops, breath ghosting over the top of Blaineās waistband, and looks up at Blaine through his eyelashes.
The wave of arousal that goes through Blaine is like an electric shock. Kurtās tongue passes over his bottom lip, wetting it, and Blaine feels the tip brush his skin. Kurtās gaze is steady, clear. Blaine nods shakily.
Kurt sucks in a deep breath and lets go of his wrists--Blaine doesnāt even question keeping his hands up there--sliding his palms over Blaineās bare torso and nosing along his waistband. Blaine can feel his breath through his capris, right over where heās straining at his zipper. With precise movements, Kurt flicks open the button of his pants and drags down the zipper, the sound loud amidst their panting breath in the wide space of the loft.
He tucks his fingers into Blaineās waistband, easing his pants down his hips. Blaine lifts his ass up so that Kurt can pull them off properly and toss them on the floor.
Heās left lying there in his underwear, shirt still rucked up around his hard nipples and chest shining with the wet patches where Kurtās mouth had been. Kurt shuffles backwards, running his hands up Blaineās calves and over his thighs, stopping where they met his dark blue briefs and looking up at Blaine through clouded eyes.
āOkay?ā he asks, and his voice is rasping, filled with desire; Blaine nods quickly and flexes his fingers.
Kurt mouths over his clothed cock, running his nose up the length of it in his briefs, following with his fingers and catching them in the waistband. āGonna take these off now,ā he breathes, and Blaine chokes out some form of answer, his words getting stuck in his throat.
More urgent now, Kurt pulls his briefs down his thighs, eyes widening when Blaineās heavy cock springs back onto his belly, already leaking a thin trail of precome over the head. Blaine sucks in a breath, needing friction now.
Kurt takes him in hand and starts to jack him off, slowly at first, then speeding up when Blaine canāt stop himself from letting out a low-pitched whine.
āPlease, Kurt, need--need your mouth on me,ā Blaine moans, eyes slipping shut at the way Kurtās fingers flick over the head of his cock.
He feels the bed move and suddenly Kurtās hot breath is right there over the base of his cock. He whines again as Kurt licks up the side of it, swirling his tongue around the head and gathering up the precome there. āGod,ā murmurs Kurt, mouthing over the head and back down the side. āI knew you were vocal, heard you whining and moaning every time you and that douchebag were fucking only two curtains away.ā
āKurt, can we please not talk about him right now--ā Blaine gasps.
āI would fantasize about it, you know,ā Kurt continues, licking at his balls then up at his cock again. āWould lie there only a few meters away and jerk off to the sound of you coming.ā
āOh my God, Kurt--ā
Heās cut off by a gasp as Kurt takes him into his mouth, sucking him down into his mouth and bobbing his head up and down. God, Kurt is talented with his tongue, knows just how to move, just how much pressure--
He pulls off with a wet smack and murmurs, a fine gossamer strand of spit between his lips and the tip of Blaineās cock, āIāve wanted you since the moment I knew what wanting meant.ā
Blaineās heart is pounding in his chest, and he nods urgently, releasing his hands from their invisible hold and sliding his fingers into Kurtās soft hair, guiding him as he continues to bob up and down, faster and faster, bringing Blaine right to the brink--
He comes with a harsh cry of Kurtās name, tightening his fingers in his hair as it pulses through him.
He comes down slowly as Kurt pets at his skin, rubbing his lips against his softening cock with his eyes closed. He blearily reaches for one of Kurtās hands where it rests on his hip, sliding their fingers together and admiring how well they fit.
Kurt looks up at him with dark, soft eyes, and Blaine smiles, tugging on his hand so that he moves up his body and is leaning over him again.
They donāt speak, just move together, lips meeting as if they were magnetised, already so open and wanting. Blaine can taste himself in Kurtās mouth.
He feels Kurt hard against his thigh, and rocks his hips forwards to give him some relief. Kurt groans against his lips, tightening his fingers around Blaineās back and rutting harder against him. Blaine gets a hand down between them and fumbles with Kurtās belt and pants, eventually managing to flick them open and stick a hand down Kurtās underwear, circling his big cock with his fist.
Itās only a matter of moments before Kurt is panting against his neck, seizing up almost silently as he comes. Blaine works him through it, kissing over his neck and ear, and they collapse onto their sides together, cheeks pressed together and chests heaving.
āOh my God,ā breathes Kurt, and laughs. āBlaine.ā
Blaine laughs too, and leans back to kiss him again. āPlease tell me that this means something.ā He says it with a smile, but it doesnāt mask the hint of worry in his voice.
Kurt strokes a hand down his back. āOf course it does,ā he whispers, nudging their noses together. āThis--means everything, Blaine.ā His voice is almost inaudible. āYou mean everything.ā
Blaine kisses him fiercely and tips their foreheads together, eyes closed. āIām so in love with you,ā he sighs. āI have been for so long.ā
When he opens his eyes, Kurt is smiling at him so softly and happily. āI love you too,ā he murmurs, brushing a hand over Blaineās cheek. āGod, it took us a while to get our act together, didnāt it?ā
Blaine giggles. āYou know that tickle fights are always the way to my heart.ā

anon prompted:Ā K and B are strangers and one day they keep stumbling upon each other during their journey: lending an umbrella, keeping the elevator door open for the other, both in line for coffee at the same cafĆØ, etc. It might seem like one is suspiciously following the other, but actually they have the same destination, an audition, only one of them is the casting director and the other is the person auditioning :):)
~1400 words, PG (minus an f-bomb), fluffy as hell.
The words just slipped out as Kurt glanced up at the sky, feeling a raindrop pelt him square in the eye.
āOh, fuck.ā
āNot expecting the storm?ā an unfamiliar voice asked. Kurt turned his focus back to the street to see a cute, kind-looking man in a green cardigan and fitted slacks smiling at him sympathetically.
āNo, and I donāt even have an umbrella back in my apartment,ā Kurt said, rolling his eyes at his own stupidity. āItās been on my list of things to purchase, but somehow, something else always takes precedence.ā
āI know how that goes,ā the man said, large hazel eyes sparkling with understanding. āHere.ā
He stuck out his unopened umbrella, offering it to Kurt, who stepped back.
āWhat? No, I couldnāt-ā
āI donāt mind, really,ā the man said, stubbornly pressing the umbrella into Kurtās defensively raised hands. āI can handle a little rain, and you look like youāre dressed nicely for a reason. If Iām meant to get it back, I will.ā
He hurried off before Kurt could protest again, leaving him with no choice but to use his unexpected gains. The sunny yellow fabric made him feel like dancing with every step.
______________________
Kurt smiled as he waited for his coffee to come up, loving the scent of freshly ground beans that permeated the air. He idly gazed over at the other customers waiting to order, always up for some people-watching, and noticed a distinctive flash of green.
Thankfully, his order was called seconds later, allowing him to approach Cute and Thoughtful without forgoing the whole reason he was at that coffee shop - his beloved nonfat mocha.
āI guess it was meant to be,ā he said once he was within earshot of the other man. āWould you like this back?ā
āItās still raining,ā Cute and Thoughtful said, looking pleasantly surprised. āDonāt you need it?ā
āIām about to get on the subway, and neither of my stops are all that far from the stations. My outfit will make it - your hairdo might not,ā Kurt replied, nodding at the manās gelled-down black hair that was starting to frizz around the edges. āYou saved me from looking like a total disaster. Weāll just both have to be a little sloppier than weād like.ā
āIām sure no one could ever think of you as sloppy,ā CaT said, taking his umbrella back. Their hands brushed as they made the exchange, sending tingles up Kurtās arm.
āYouāre not exactly the poster child for being disheveled either,ā Kurt said, blushing slightly.
They stared at each other for a moment, the atmosphere between them taking on a heavier charge, until the baristaās pointed throat clearings finally reminded them that they had other things to do.
_________________
Kurt ended up beating his train to the station, a move ensuring he was one of the first people in the car once it pulled in. A massive crowd followed him, all a jumble of strange faces and outfits.
Well, all but one.
āHello again,ā Cute and Thoughtful said, gripping the support pole near Kurtās seat and smiling. āI guess I didnāt need to worry about your outfit after all.ā
āAnd I suppose your hair would have survived the thirty second walk down the stairs,ā Kurt said, returning the smile. āBut Iām still happy I managed to find you again.ā
There was a pause as Kurt realized how badly CaT could take that sentence.
āI mean, so I could return your umbrella! Not that I would have regretted seeing you-ā
āNo, I get it,ā CaT said. Somehow, Kurt believed he actually did understand. āI appreciate your determination. But I still donāt regret lending it to you in the first place.ā
They shared another quiet moment, this one more comfortable than the former. Kurt was lost in CaTās eyes, feeling peculiarly at ease around this man who was technically a stranger.
āIf we get off at the same stop, would you like to share the umbrella until one of us gets to our destination?ā CaT asked softly. āIt might be nice to travel with you on purpose for once.ā
āI think that would be wonderful,ā Kurt said, just as soft. āIād like to get to know the man behind the umbrella.ā
At that, the train slowed and announced the stop, prompting a large portion of the train to head out. CaT quickly began to follow the bunch, quirking a brow at Kurt in a silent question, but Kurt lost him in the shuffle before he could nod back that yes, this was his stop too. It was all he could do to make it out the doors on time.
A curious sense of loss fell upon Kurt when he hit the platform and realized that Cute and Thoughtful - and God, could he remember to get a real name for this guy sometime soon? - was already gone, probably having assumed that Kurtās stop hadnāt come after all.
āThatās enough, Hummel,ā Kurt muttered to himself, beginning his ascent back to the sidewalk. āYour auditionās almost here, and you need to focus. Youāll probably just see this guy on the way home, if your earlier interactions are anything to go by.ā
He spent the walk to the agency building where his audition was being held doing meditative breathing, but even the power of yoga couldnāt soothe his dissatisfaction.
________________
āWait! Please hold that!ā Kurt called, seeing the elevator doors start to whir closed a few feet in front of him. He began to sprint, knowing that the old mechanisms that operated that beast wouldnāt bring it back in time if he missed this trip, and he had no idea where the stairs in this building were, so that wasnāt a feasible option.
A green cardigan-clad arm intercepted the doors, forcing them to open just in time for Kurt to slip into the otherwise deserted elevator.
āOkay, this is getting freaky,ā Kurt said, laughing a bit.
āIs this some kind of elaborate reality show stunt?ā Cute and Thoughtful asked, laughing along. āAre we about to be Punkād?ā
āIām going to say no, but only because itās no longer 2005,ā Kurt said. āUnless they just havenāt made the announcement about the reboot.ā
āI think Iād rather shave my own head before watching a Punkād reboot,ā CaT said, shuddering.
āA man after my own heart,ā Kurt said, letting out one last chuckle. āOh, uh, I realize itās probably a bit late for this, but...whatās your name?ā
āBlaine. Blaine Anderson.ā
Kurt hoped his jaw didnāt drop as wide as he thought it had.
āWhatās wrong?ā Blaine asked, forehead scrunching in concern.
āAs in casting director Blaine Anderson?ā Kurt asked. āPart of the greatest stage writing duo since Kander and Ebb?ā
āYes? I mean, yes Iām that Blaine, but I donāt know if Iād say Elliott and I are that good,ā Blaine said, still looking confused.
āIām Kurt Hummel, your eleven oāclock audition,ā Kurt said, feeling like his brain had disconnected from his body. āNice to meet you.ā
It was Blaineās turn to look stunned then, though some kind of innate politeness made him stick out a hand and offer it to Kurt for a shake.
āDamn,ā he said quietly, flushing when Kurtās raised eyebrows let him know Kurt had heard that remark. āNo, itās not that, itās - I was going to ask you to dinner if weād managed to meet up again, but I donāt want it to be some kind of casting couch deal.ā
āNor do I,ā Kurt said, understanding. āIf you cast me, I want it to be based on my skill, not any sort of relationship history we may or may not have.ā
āWeāll make it work,ā Blaine said as the doors dinged open. āCome on, I can show you the shortcut to our office.ā
He kept his grip on Kurtās hand and started steering them down a well-lit hallway. The continued contact made Kurtās heart beat somewhat erratically in his chest, and he couldnāt help but think that whether or not he got the part, something good would have to come of this meeting.
(He was right, as it turned out. He knew he hadnāt gotten the part when he left - but he had gotten Blaineās phone number.
Blaine would tell him years later that that was the moment Kurt had also gotten his heart.)
Blaine moves to Lima with his mom after his parents get a divorce. The bright side of this uprooting? Kurt Hummel.
~1700 words, PG (with like one curse word), fluffy as hell.
Blaine was already not a huge fan of this move to Lima. The neighbor whoād come over and introduced herself earlier had told his mom that the local kids all hung out by the river on Fridays, so heād been kicked out the second the clock struck seven that evening to āgo make some friends, pumpkin!ā
āLove you too, Mom,ā he muttered when the door slammed in his face. āWhat happened to unpacking together to create a family space?ā
He realized he sounded like the worldās most boring teenager at the moment, but he really didnāt care. Large crowds of strangers werenāt Blaineās thing unless he was performing for them.
Defeated, Blaine started heading down the street, happy that he at least lived close enough to walk there. It would be easier to slip away inconspicuously that way.
The distant sound of music and laughter informed him that the party had already begun. Once he rounded the corner, he could see girls dancing in truck beds and boys tossing around a frisbee and trying to make impressive catches. They were all singing along, though, which seemed like a good omen - maybe they could tell him what music groups he could join at school in the fall.
Blaine stopped a few feet away from the action, unsure of how to join in without looking like an intruder. A voice from his left helped solve that dilemma for him.
āHey! Stranger!ā a boy yelled, just loud enough to get Blaineās attention but not stop the whole party. āCāmere.ā
āIs there a password Iām supposed to give you?ā Blaine joked nervously once he got close to the tailgate the boy was sitting on. āBecause that wasnāt in the welcome basket our neighbors gave us.ā
āI think your name will be enough for now,ā the boy said, smiling flirtily and making Blaineās heart skip a beat. āIāve gotta know what to yell in case that frisbee comes sailing over here, after all.ā
āBlaine.ā
āKurt.ā Kurt stuck his hand out for a shake, which Blaine accepted easily. āCome sit by me.ā
Blaine hoisted himself onto the tailgate, just close enough that he could feel Kurtās body heat next to him. āSo, uh...youāre not into frisbee?ā
āI donāt mind playing, but I just felt like watching the water go by for a bit. Iāll have plenty of time to annihilate my brother and our friends later,ā Kurt replied. āPlus, how rude would I be to leave the new kid all by himself?ā
āDonāt feel stuck here on my account!ā Blaine said quickly. āIf you want to go-ā
āBlaine,ā Kurt said. āItās okay. I am absolutely fine with just sitting and talking - as long as youāre a decent conversationalist, at least.ā
āIāve never bored anyone to sleep yet,ā Blaine said, parroting Kurtās playful tone.
āThen tonight should be a blast,ā Kurt said. āSo tell me, whatās your story, Blaine?ā
Blaine launched into the familiar details - parentsā divorce, fresh start, etc. - and Kurt listened attentively, showing actual interest. He responded with his own thirty-second life story before asking another question, this one about interests.
The second Blaine said he liked pop music and theatre, he knew heād found a kindred spirit in Kurt. They started chattering away like theyād known each other their whole lives, talking about the recent Tony awards and what deserved to be the song of the summer. Just as Blaine was finishing his impassioned defense of Maroon 5, Kurt held up his hand and shushed him.
āOooh, this is my song!ā Kurt cried, cocking a head towards the speakers the girls had set up on one of the picnic tables. āCāmon, letās dance.ā
Kurt pushed himself up and starting shimmying around the inside of the truck bed, beckoning for Blaine to get up and join him.
Blaine couldnāt resist a cute boy begging him to dance. He shoved himself upright and started bopping around with Kurt, busting out the most ridiculous dance moves he knew. Kurt instantly played along, and half of their ādanceā was spent giggling at each other while still attempting to keep the beat.
The song ended all too soon, switching to something slow and sad. The girls were all belting along and swaying in their truck beds, but Kurt and Blaine simply flumped back down on their tailgate, red with exertion but still smiling.
āI told you so,ā Kurt said after a moment.
āHuh?ā Blaine replied eloquently.
āI told you Iād have a good time as long as you could hold a conversation,ā Kurt explained. āIn fact, I had a great time once you started dancing along with me. I was afraid youād be a party pooper.ā
āHow rude would I be to make my new friend dance alone?ā Blaine said, purposely echoing one of Kurtās comments from earlier. He knew Kurt had gotten the reference when a pleased smile appeared across Kurtās lips.
āIām sorry about your parentsā divorce, but Iām not at all disappointed that you moved here, Blaine Anderson,ā Kurt said.
āYou know, I think Iām seeing the bright side myself,ā Blaine said, moving his hand tentatively on top of Kurtās. His watch happened to be on that wrist, allowing Blaine to catch a glimpse of the time. āOh shit, itās almost ten oāclock and I still havenāt unpacked my bedsheets.ā
āDonāt leave just yet!ā Kurt said. He knee-walked across the truck bed to the open back window, where he leaned in and pulled out something from the center console before scuttling back. āYou need this.ā
He leaned over and wrote his phone number and Kurt :) on the back of Blaineās hand in permanent marker, blowing gently to dry the ink. A shiver ran down Blaineās spine at the fairly intimate gesture.
āThanks,ā Blaine said softly. āYou want me to text you when I get back?ā
āFor starters,ā Kurt replied. āBut yeah, knowing you didnāt get lost on the way back would be great.ā
āI can do that,ā Blaine said. āUm...see you next week?ā
āSounds like a...like a plan,ā Kurt said, flushing.
Blaine couldnāt help but hope Kurt had intended to say like a date.
_________________________
The next week seemed to drag, in Blaineās opinion. He knew he could always try to make plans with Kurt so they could see each other sooner, but he was afraid that a change of venue would disturb their rapport somehow. Waiting for the next riverside party felt safer.
That didnāt mean he and Kurt werenāt texting daily, though. Their conversation from the first party had continued and expanded, and Blaine was definitely guilty of including a few comments that could be interpreted flirtatiously. He noticed a few distinctly non-platonic remarks in Kurtās replies, though, leading him to believe that his interest was returned.
Thankfully, Friday rolled back around before Blaine could do anything too rash, like show up at his house with a boom box a la Say Anything.
(Which was good, because Blaine thought he remembered Kurt saying his room faced the back of his house. Also, he didnāt actually own a boom box.)
Just ask him tonight, Blaine thought as he got ready. You donāt even have to call it a date if he doesnāt seem interested. Just ask if heād be willing to show you the rest of town sometime or something.
He took a deep breath, straightened the collar of his emerald green polo, and headed out of the house, calling a quick goodbye to his mom as he did.
The walk down the street felt much quicker this week, and not just because Blaine knew where he was going this time. When he arrived at the little park, he noticed Kurt was already dancing away in his truck bed, carefree and happy. Blaine couldnāt help but smile in response.
At least until he saw Kurt trip over the hinge of the tailgate and start to fall, flailing his arms desperately in an attempt to not faceplant onto the ground below.
Blaine instantly started running, hoping the ten or fifteen feet between them wasnāt too much. He reached Kurtās truck just in time for Kurtās balance to finally give way and extended his arms, figuring he might be able to push Kurt back into the truck.
Instead, he caught an armful of torso and landed flat on his back.
āOof,ā Blaine wheezed.
The weight on his chest rolled off then, allowing him to suck in a much-needed breath.
āOh my God, are you okay?ā Kurt asked, hands fluttering nervously above Blaineās body. āDid I break anything?ā
āNo, just knocked the wind out of me,ā Blaine said, pushing himself into a sitting position. āBetter that than you biting it on the rocks down here, though.ā
āI didnāt even see you get here, how did you manage to break my fall like that?ā Kurt said.
āI had just arrived when I saw you trip,ā Blaine said. āSo I bolted the last few feet and hoped Iād get here in time to help somehow. It was just...instinct.ā
On that word, he looked directly into Kurtās eyes, which were full of worry and gratitude and some other emotion Blaine couldnāt quite place. The swirling blues and grays of Kurtās irises mesmerized him too much to really care about defining it just then, though.
āInstinct for you to try and catch me,ā Kurt muttered, incredulous. āGod, I just - I need to-ā
Needed to kiss Blaine, apparently, as he broke off there to cup Blaineās cheeks and pull him in.
Blaine wasnāt upset with this turn of events.
āThat was...that was something,ā he said breathlessly when Kurt finally let him go.
āA good something?ā Kurt asked hopefully.
āA great something,ā Blaine answered. āWould you maybe like to continue this something with me over dinner tomorrow? You can pick the restaurant, since I kind of donāt know whatās good around here yet.ā
āAs long as we can also continue this something while we watch the fireworks Finn and Puck brought with them later,ā Kurt said, smiling giddily.
āSounds like a date,ā Blaine said, returning Kurtās grin.
(Once they started cuddling under the spare blanket Kurt had brought along with him, Blaine knew there was nothing ālikeā about this date. The kisses they started trading again a few minutes later only confirmed that notion, as did Kurtās quiet āBye, sweetheart,ā when he had to leave.)

oh no way, screw facebook.
I mean I did sign up once, but I deleted it because I wasnāt using it anyway. Do I really need one more social networking site to inform people what I had for breakfast?
