This just makes me think about 8/15 final confrontation where Ene finds Saeru's notes.

Saeru wouldn't need to write down the number due to his knowledge bank/retention of memories, but maybe he does it purposefully so that Ene can find his notes.

Like I was imagining that Saeru marks an "X" in his journal everytime there's a new loop (or something)

At first Ene is confused and wonder if the X's represent victims but there's this daunting (horrific) realization about the number of times he's done this and emerged as the "winner" of this game.

I think I had a shitpost where he marks an "X" for every single one of their intimate encounters (he wouldn't need to do that since he remembers them - it's just for Ene to find in the "end game" of a Route), and I feel like Ene would explode (figuratively) if she saw that /lh

I think in my personal takes, Saeru has such resentment and revulsion for love, especially Azami's love, due to it robbing him of his purpose.

What a foolish emotion. That thing, love, that drives humans to such foolish heights of desperation!

So foolish and lovely. He loves humans in all their foolishness.

And I feel like, through him messing around in the Routes (in my AU), he thinks considerably more favourably about the love that benefits him.

Because he weaponizes knowledge. Because his "love" (twisted obsession) is self-serving and ultimately feeds his ego in the end.

Quoting my previous rambles and Feila's rambles:

KuroEne is so interesting to think about... Thinking about how the pleasure that he offers (to her) clearly comes at a price, and that his S/O ends up losing everything they hold dear at the end.

What an unfair exchange... Though in the end, he rigged the game this way with his manipulations to ensnare his prey.

The other reason for his resentment for "love" is because, not only does he not understand love, he doesn't understand the type of love that comes with watching someone you love and care about grow and nurturing/watching over them (theme-ing used from Fate)

The way that Azami loves is so innately good and pure, selfless, in a way that animals around her could instantly recognize her good nature and purity. The opposite of him - evil and selfish.

I feel like Ene should call him out on that on the 8/15 Lab Infiltration:

"You know nothing about the kind of love of caring for others, and watching other people grow."

So basically, watching someone you care about grow alongside you.

He's the opposite of that. Saeru as a character obviously encourages regression in his partner, and in general, encourages the indulgence of evil and sin, and for them to fall into their darker/carnal urges.

He will cater to their pleasures, but it's ultimately self-serving because in the end, he does these "acts of service" because he gets benefits out of them, in the end. It caters to his pleasures the most.

Cuz it's like.

Imo in the KuroEne AU, he has no attachment to the name "Kuroha" except to use it as a tool/stepping stone for his goals

Especially when that name represents Ene's lingering attachments to Haruka/Konoha, and how she sees him as the last (only) remnant (fragment) of Haruka/Konoha that exists.

But the name "Saeru" holds meaning to him in a way that "Kuroha" never could.

So I feel like he gets incredibly excited whenever his S/O uses his true name (if he's revealed it atp)

To me, the name "Kuroha" has no meaning to him, except to use as a tool/stepping stone for his goals (ex. in this case, to ensnare Ene in his trap)

Because like, in most KuroEne AU Routes, he reveals himself as "Black Konoha" (later uses the nickname that Ene uses for him, "Kuroha," cuz she wanted to shorten the nickname), and then if he's able to, reveals the name Saeru.

I think the early chapters might imply Kido might've stolen things for the base's decorations (from Kano's words)

Also makes sense that they wanna avoid the eyes of authorities and stay low (since Kano knows about Saeru's existence)

Iirc, Saeru has control over entire departments thanks to his manipulations.

I need to refine this set of dialogue scripts later, but I wrote this a couple months ago.

Kuroha/Saeru arranges a meeting with Ene

I was just rereading my old dialogue scripts and I was just wondering...

How do you think Kuroha arranges his first meeting with Ene?

I suppose he could just find/track her location and then send her an e-mail asking to meet-up.

But I wonder how Ene could agree to such a proposition, especially since it must come off as so suspicious to get an e-mail from a stranger

Then I imagine Ene eventually agrees (since Saeru can be persuasive enough imo)

Saeru ensures Ene is in the general vicinity and lets her follow him (as she jumps through electronic devices to chase after him in the city)

He then heads to an abandoned building to talk to her privately

That's when Saeru introduces himself to Ene.

"Hello... I do believe this is the first time we've met?"

Would he be straightforward with the email tho?? For all we know, he could be disguising his words like "Congrats, you've been picked to test out a new robot body" or something

2 years ago, Haruka and Takane died, and Ene lost her human body and gained her cyber body through Opening Eyes.

From what I understand, Ene finds Shintaro after searching for a home for 1 year and then lives with him in his computer/phone. So she was on her own before that.

So all Saeru has to do is find and meet Ene within that one year timespan (before Shintaro does) 👍

Kagerou Daze: Ch. 1

Though Ene would constantly be on the move and moving from place to place.

It'd be a bit harder to find her since she's constantly moving from place to place in the cyber world (since he probably has ways to be able to tap/track someone's location)

But he has 1 year. That's more than enough time for him.

I have faith in him considering he's the one that creates Ene's android body (in this AU) in the first place 🙏

He's the only one in KagePro who could possibly pull off a feat like that. 👍

There are a few options we could go here

KuroEne's First Meeting

Option 1:

Ene is in the city and Kuroha/Saeru just shows up in the general vicinity ("chance meeting/encounter," but Saeru ensured that she'd be in the general vicinity)

Option 2:

Saeru emails Ene first. They could either go back and forth with emails until Saeru can relieve Ene's suspicions and Ene agrees to the meet-up (so she's still suspicious, but it's enough for her to agree to meet him)

Option 3:

Saeru emails Ene first.

Ene insists that the mysterious sender sends a video or audio clip of himself so that it cannot be faked.

She tells him that she'll know if the other person sends a duplicate photo from the internet or uses an AI voice.

I feel like Saeru would prefer for her to see his appearance for the first time in-person (when they actually meet-up, just cuz he wants to see her surprised reaction)

Saeru agrees to sending a short audio clip or going on audio call for a bit. Ene is shocked when she hears that the person on the other end has Haruka's voice.

Option 4:

Saeru emails Ene first. Ene asks about his identity, which prompts Saeru to ask if she wants to see his face.

He (or Ene) then proposes to do a video call. Saeru agrees in order to help "clear" Ene's suspicions of him.

Ene is shocked when he sees his face, though partially obscured by shadow due to the lighting.

F: Option 3 feels like giving her false hope with that statement

Option 4 is the best imo

I definitely don't think Saeru would be THAT straightforward, because that'd just be WAY too suspicious.

The dude is really clever and cunning. He'd be way more subtle than that.

Also yeah.

Iirc the only way a hacker can compromise your account and get your IP address is if you click sus links (ph*shing) or open a malicious downloaded file (with a virus) and run the executable.

Ex. If you get a suspicious Discord server link (that usually has a weird font), and you click on it. It then asks you to login to Discord via a QR code or sus link they send.

It then compromises your account and sp*ms the same invite message to everyone in your Friend's List.

There's also a Discord sc*m where they disguise it as "Hey I need help testing a game. Can you run it?"

The above photo is a sc*m server. Every server invite that has that font is usually a sc*m server. The font is not like usual Discord server invites.

I feel like Saeru thinks that once he's killed half of the MekaDan, his victory is guaranteed (set in stone)

Because Mary will rewind the world if anyone dies, in the hopes of trying again for a future where they finally defeat him and get to move onto the future with everyone.

Saeru's Lab Infiltration on August 17th (Novel Route)

I haven't reread the Novels in a while so I reread a summary for now.

The Wiki sums up the entire Novel Route pretty well.

The Novel Route shows that the members don't necessarily have to all get killed by Kuroha/Saeru on August 15th.

In the Novel Route, the MekaDan plans their infiltration of Saeru's lab on August 17th (which is when mostly everyone dies)

Hibiya and Takane decide to stay far away from Saeru's hideout on look-out as watchers at first, because they know that their Eye Abilities don't actually protect them from Saeru at all.

Ok, it's been so long since I read the LNs...

So I assume that when the other members die, Mary is able to undo the Kagerou Daze's original command by Azami to only pull in people on August 15th, and pull them into the Kagerou Daze.

Shintaro and Kido first get shot by Kuroha/Saeru in his lab, and then afterwards, everyone dies but Seto, Mary, and Hibiya (because they were protecting Mary)

The Novel Route might save Seto and Hibiya's charas for me once I reread it (if the Novel Route makes them more interesting), though it's tentative since they're still the bottom MekaDan members in my tier list tbh

Personally, those two are the least interesting MekaDan members to me, design and personality/character-wise.

Ene would be aware that her Eye Ability does not protect her from Saeru at all in the KuroEne AU: MaryEne team-up Route.

She's also banking on the fact that she could live if she indulges/engages in pleasures/intimacy with him (which is something that's only possible with Saeru's S/O, like in MR2 he just kills Kano for both serving as a diversion/distraction and angering him lol)

Imo Saeru entertains their antics because he's built up a connection with his S/O, and because of his ego, doesn't see their actions as a threat to him.

But there's no other choice since everyone else is dead, and it's just the two of them left. She would never let Mary go alone by herself, AND she wants to confront Saeru for answers for her own sake (finding some sense of closure) too.

Which is why Ene chooses to bait him into intimacy, knowing that he'll take the bait, because he won't turn down the opportunity to indulge in more pleasures with her.

It's honestly a good call on her part (especially when it's the first MaryEne team-up Route ever), because it's guaranteed to work imo.

So this also means that there could be KuroEne Routes where the other members die on August 15th (or even on later days), and after that, MaryEne sneak out/try to avoid Saeru's detection for the next few/couple days afterwards to plan their lab infiltration.

That makes me wonder, do the dates matter? Or is it the amount of snakes collected that matters?

Me: The Novel Route is the only Route I know of where the MekaDan members get killed on a different date (August 17th)

I think the date matters in the sense that for Saeru usually kills the MekaDan on August 15th due to Azami's original command to the Kagerou Daze, "Swallow them up on August 15th and give them new life"

I'm assuming the date doesn't matter as much, as long as Mary undoes the command so that it can swallow in dead people after Saeru kills them.

I'm assuming it's the amount of members dead/snakes collected that matters.

Mary needs a minimum of 6 snakes to rewind the world.

Then that means that Saeru needs to kill a minimum of 5 people in the Mekakushi Dan for Mary to be able to reset the timeline with the Queen Snake, Combining Eyes.

Because once they die, Mary will absorb the dead members' snakes.

And I'm assuming Saeru knows (from previous Routes) that Mary needs a certain amount of snakes to be able to reset the timeline.

Kano and Ayano (if she's alive) know about Saeru's existence prior to the present plot.

So he probably figures it’s best for him to wait and not act until then.

F: Wait so Mary doesn't know how to properly use the queen snake or???

I mean she's a hundred years old, I'm assuming she has probably 50 - 70 years to learn how to use them, but then again, her mental age is basically that of a teenager's, which is not helping her out

Me: Iirc, Mary has the storybook and Azami's diary, but I'm assuming it's because she's never had to use Combining Eyes until Saeru kills everyone.

So it's most likely from a lack of experience.

Mary doesn't learn how to use her Eye Abilities in the Music Route (Outer Science), but instinctively uses Combining Eyes to rewind the world after wishing to see her friends' again because Saeru furthers her despair/hopelessness by killing her friends.

And she's not a full Medusa like Azami, so I assume she can't use her own powers seamlessly until it gets strengthened with more snakes.

Considering how she's only able to do things like change the Daze's commands if her Combining Eyes gets strengthened with more snakes.

Or she probably just never thought about using Combining Eyes.

I think it's also cuz the MekaDan have limited info, at least going off what Kido knows in MR2.

Kagerou Daze: Ch. 30

Kido says that in all situations, they were killed on August 15th with someone they entered the Daze with, and only they escaped and came out with red Eyes, and the other person is still trapped in the Daze.

Like how Mary and her mother Shion were killed by humans, and Azami had to give up her Queen Snake to save Mary's life.

Because of that, Azami lost control of the Kagerou Daze, and it kept repeating her original command to swallow dead people and give them an Eye Ability Snake if they're compatible.

Which was all according to Saeru's plan.

So in MR2, I assume that Mary eventually gets a handle on how to use Azami's powers and learns how to use multiple Eye Abilities consecutively one after the other, prior to arranging the meeting with Saeru.

Since Mary gets tired out using 3 Eye Abilities consecutively in a row after her meeting with Saeru.

With that being said, Mary's reasoning that Saeru might take innocent people hostage or blow up the town as a lesson to them, is also another reason for why in my KuroEne AU, MaryEne decides to confront Saeru at his lab directly.

And with Ene and her more aggressive, confrontational, competitive nature, she can't just take a "loss" to him, lying down.

So that's why I think Ene is the one to inspire hope in Mary to fight back against him with everything they have.

Misc Rambles

Mary's Locking Eyes (目を合わせる, Me wo Awaseru), and Combining Eyes (目を合体せる, Me wo Awaseru), are pronounced the same but use different kanji to differentiate them.

Ene's Eye Ability, Opening Eyes (目が覚める, Me ga Sameru), and Konoha's Eye Ability, Awakening Eyes (目を醒ます, Me wo Samasu), have really similar meanings.

It seems like it's because of this, that Yen Press gets tripped up and inconsistently translates the names of the Eye Abilities at times.

This post explains the nuance difference between the two verbs.

I do like this nuance cuz in Ene's case, "Opening" or "Waking up to reality" has an emphasis on the waking of one's consciousness/awareness, or coming to a sudden realization (ex. Ene losing her human body and gaining her cyber body)

And I think this plays up well to the fact that Ene's biggest character struggle and deepest vulnerability is "Running away from confronting her more honest feelings and troubles/reality"

When she gained her cyber body, Ene "opened her eyes" (or "woke up") on her own.

Konoha woke up (as a snake in a human, Haruka's body) in Saeru's lab.

Though I'm so glad that Yen Press was the one that translated the KagePro LNs and Manga 🙏

Their translations are generally so goated, so ofc I'll let the minor errors slide (cuz they're honestly inevitable in a 150 - 200+ page volume)

Yen Press typically has the best translation quality and prose style out of the biggest English manga localizers (Viz, Kodansha, Yen Press), at least imo.

Kuroha/Saeru's Views on Love ❤️🖤

F: I feel like Saeru seducing Ene to fall for his temptations would satisfy his ego, since it proves his theory that humans will fall for any trap as long as they get something in return

Me: Imo that's how the whole KuroEne AU started.

Kuroha/Saeru just doesn't understand love in its purest form, so naturally, his love will inevitably be very obsessive and twisted at the core.

He mocks and looks down on "love"

Because he doesn't understand it, and because Azami's pure love for her family ended up robbing him of a purpose, so he naturally became resentful at the world and mankind out of spite.

But imo, he would be curious about it.

Once he got bored of JUST killing the MekaDan, he started wondering about the existence of this so-called "love," the thing that drives humans to such foolish acts of desperation.

Kuroha: Humans will do anything for love, isn't that right?

Saeru believes that "Despair" (絶望, zetsubou) is the fuel of what drives peoples' wishes.

So then, it must be because of "love."

Azami wanted to be with her family forever (out of a sense of desperation, when she started noticing how she was the only one that wouldn't age, but her family still was...)

Mary wanted to reset the world out of desperation to see her friends again.

And then in my AU, he came to the conclusion that love and despair exist in tandem.

And then later, it just develops to him wanting to have fun with his S/O in the "game" that he's the ringmaster of.

He gets to satisfy his own desires while catering to his S/O's desires and pleasures.

He sees it as a Win-Win. ✌️

With that being said...

Even if he does cater to their desires and pleasures, though, his love is ultimately selfish and self-serving, because in the end it's for his own sake, above all else.

(Saeru losing a purpose led to him gaining his own will/sentience/identity. And his actions to keep up his pseudo immortality are also acts of desperation.)

Snakes in EA/SEA culture and media tend to be depicted as wise and cunning.

C: Who's going to tell people snakes are actually dumb as balls and have permanent "OwO" expressions

S: Who’s gonna tell 'em that they’re very bumpy and not slim and slithery

I looked through this Reddit post on Snake Intelligence

Summary of some snake owners' comments:

They can associate their owners with safety and curl around them to ground themselves

Snakes have some capacity for learning abilities

They're active when hunting and mainly make associations through food (ex. remembering feeding times)

They are able to determine what are threats or not

They can still solve certain problems, and can develop long term memory/recognition of familiar surroundings

They're generally considered to be on the lower end of intelligence out of reptiles and animals in general.

Though it depends what aspects we're looking at.

Logic and Instinct

(Add on rambles. I have been thinking about this.)

Me: My guy certainly lucked out with being the embodiment of knowledge.

Saeru (Clearing) is the only one of Azami's Eye Ability Snakes that developed sentience (due to Azami's wish changing)

Konoha/Samasu (Awakening) developed sentience due to influence from Haruka's body

I find that so interesting though, because Snakes are animals that rely on Instinct.

But he is the embodiment of Knowledge.

So he's definitely an outlier in that aspect.

It sets him apart from his fellow Eye Ability Snakes, "brethren/brothers" (同胞, douhou) in his own words.

Combining, the Queen Snake, was probably born with Azami, but then Saeru was created from her desire to know and understanding herself

(So they existed in a black void, before the world was created through Azami's desire)

Along with the fact that he's the only Eye Ability Snake that has actual sentience?

Like he gained his own will and sentience because Azami's wish changed.

(Other than Konoha gaining his own sense of self later due to the influence of Haruka's body and wish ofc)

But one thing I'll say is that humans are beings that are driven by instinct.

In the context of my KuroEne AU, Saeru wants to “corrupt” his S/O and taint their soul by leaving his marks on them across timelines.

In doing so, he satisfies his desire/need for his existence to have meaning - to be wanted and deemed necessary by someone by establishing a fated karmic relationship with them that spans timelines and thus making himself the center of their world

(And in the end, he is the one that destroys their world, by shattering the illusion of a happy future!)

And with the way Saeru acts in my AU... How he realizes that he can get into his S/O's heart by catering to their pleasures...

That is definitely something driven by instinct, not logic.

At the end of the day, human beings are a mess of contradictions (ex. the tendency of "hating while loving")

So in the end, he's ironic.

He isn't immune to human sentimentality (or human emotions) at all.

Kuroha/Saeru's Motivations

This just perfectly sums up Kuroha/Saeru's motivations in my KuroEne AU

I tend to just screenshot it or copy paste it cuz I don't want to rewrite it when it's such an apt descriptor for WHY he does all this (goes all this way) in the KuroEne AU

Saeru's actions in my AU really does make his irony come full circle.

Kuroha/Saeru's Low Emotional Permanence

I HC that Kuroha/Saeru has low emotional permanence.

When combined with his actions in my AU… In my own HCs, he is comforted by and relying on the knowledge that "the time loop will always continue" and "his S/O will always be there and he will always get to see them, so they will always be together"

If something actually manages to hurt that and prove to be a genuine risk to his August 15th plot (that keeps up his pseudo immortality), it gives me the feeling that he'd be genuinely distressed.

The affirmation through peoples' desires/wishes, the "proof of love" and feelings his S/O provided him (acknowledgement, amusement), are missing???

God, he cannot have that (happen) at all.

Since Ene is his S/O in my AU and would have lingering feelings for Haruka, imo he doesn't mind his S/O having previous or multiple loves.

Adding an extra layer of angst to KuroEne and KonoEne:

Canonically, according to the LNs, Haruka (who is trapped in the Kagerou Daze), can view and hear what Konoha experiences.

So… Does that mean Haruka see and hear through Saeru’s vision? Or is his connection completely cut off when Kuroha/Saeru steals Konoha’s body?

If Haruka can see Ene through Saeru’s vision……

Can he see all of that? Can he see through his body's vision, even if Saeru is possessing Konoha?

CUZ IF HE DOES…

That adds sooo much angst to my KuroEne AU if Haruka is able to "see" Saeru’s actions from the Daze.

Witnessing it as a spectator/audience member, without being able to stop any of it.

(Though I’m not sure if Haruka still keeps this connection when Kuroha/Saeru steals and possesses Konoha’s body. I’d have to reread the LNs sometime as a refresher)

Imagine seeing the person you love (Takane/Ene) project their feelings for you onto motherfucking Snake of Clearing Eyes (Kuroha/Saeru), the evil big bad, the guy that killed everyone and caused all of this in the first place, just because he has your face, body, and voice...

And then Kuroha/Saeru gives Ene the companionship she longed for (since Ene wanted a friend...)

But this adds an extra layer of angst to every single KonoEne scene (and KuroEne in my KuroEne AU)

Ene looks exactly like Takane except with blue hair. Ene was the name of her game avatar/persona... Haruka DEFINITELY would've recognized her.

Haruka could draw Takane without reference and imagine her perfectly, and also gets mildly jealous about her.

But like OUCH, I can't imagine how hurt Haruka would've been when he recognized Ene (by seeing and hearing him through Konoha)

And how devastated Ene looked when Konoha didn't recognize her.

BUT IMAGINE IF HE /CAN/ SEE THROUGH SAERU’S VISION CUZ IT’S KONOHA’S BODY…

Anyways, Haruka being able to "see" Saeru's actions through Konoha's body is just my fan-HC/speculation.

I would need to reread the LNs again to confirm.

But if it’s true…

If it’s true, then this info would recontextualize every single Konoha scene and Kuroha/Saeru scene (where Kuroha/Saeru possesses Konoha's body)

Oh man... But god I wish KagePro canon used this untapped angst potential of Haruka reacting to Kuroha/Saeru killing Ene and Shintaro in MR1 and Ene confusing Konoha for him in MR2

Because Iirc Haruka did say in LN 6 that Shintaro was killed by him, while referring to Black Konoha

Like with that, he’d be able to piece together that he (Saeru) is indeed the one that killed them (Haruka and Takane)

But wouldn't be able to do anything about it.
