Kumartuli est un quartier du nord de Calcutta, célèbre centre de création des idoles hindoues qui servent aux dévotions liées aux festivals religieux. Une idole est faite en plusieurs étapes: la première consiste en la création d'une armature en bois. Ensuite, cette armature est recouverte de paille, comme sur cette photo, puis d'argile afin de donner à la sculpture ses volumes généraux. L'artiste travaille particulièrement les membres qui seront visibles comme la tête, les bras et le buste. L'idole est ensuite peinte puis habillée et parée de bijoux. Chaque artiste est spécialisé dans une étape particulière, tous se relayant. L'étape la plus importante est lorsque l'artiste le plus mûr de l'atelier maquille les yeux de la déesse - en lui "ouvrant" les yeux, il lui donne vie. La principale source de travail pour ces artistes est la fête de Durgā pūjā qu'ils préparent pendant plusieurs mois. Au comble de la fête, après une procession dans la ville, les idoles éphémères sont plongées dans le fleuve.
*********************************** Kumortuli is a district in the north of Kolkata, a famous center for manufactures clay idols for various festivals. An idol is made in several stages: the first consists in the creation of a wooden frame. Then, this framework is covered with straw, as in this photo, then of clay in order to give the sculpture its general volumes. The artist works especially the limbs that will be visible as the head, arms and bust. The idol is then painted and then dressed and adorned with jewels. Each artist is specialized in a particular stage, all taking turns. The most important step is when the mature artist of the studio makes up the eyes of the goddess - by "opening" her eyes, it gives life to it. The main source of work for these artists is Durgā pūjā festival which they prepare for several months. During the festival, after a procession in the city, ephemeral idols are plunged into the river.
