While I always appreciate the rare song where Jeff Lynne gets political, I think it would be better if it were a little shorter.
About a week ago, I listened to ELO II so I could finally write a post about it.
âIn Old England Townâ
A particular musical element of this caused the greatest delay in this post. Â Iâd thought that a section of the guitar part resembles that at the very end of the Beatlesâ âCarry That Weightâ (which carries over into a bit of âThe Endâ), but I didnât really want to say anything until I learned the parts. Â I havenât learned all of the guitar phrase in âIn Old England Town,â but I did learn enough to compare it to that in âCarry That Weightâ (a phrase which I did learn in its entirety), and I discovered that while the phrase in âIn Old England Townâ is much longer, it at least starts the same. Â Both phrases are arpeggiated chords beginning with C majors and then going to C major 7ths. Â âCarry That Weightâ then goes to an A major, but âIn Old England Townâ continues various arpeggiations so that thereâs a chromatic phrase from that initial C all the way to (I think) D.
Iâm not sure if that arpeggiated change from C major to C major 7th was directly inspired by âCarry That Weight,â but considering that the Electric Light Orchestra was founded âto continue where âI Am the Walrusâ left offâ or whatever it was, Iâm more likely to think Beatle connections intentional than just coincidences.  (Iâve seen that âI Am the Walrusâ statement quoted in a few different places, but I havenât been able to find an original source for it.)
Speaking of which, that guitar phrase isnât the only Beatle connection that âIn Old England Townâ has.  Along with that arpeggiated part, I learned a few other sections.  âIn Old England Townâ starts with alternating G#s and Gs before going down to repeated Es (something like G# G G# G G# G E E E E E), which bears some similarity to the beginning of the Beatlesâ âDay Tripper,â albeit reversed.  The riff in âDay Tripperâ starts with E G G#.  In any case, both are sort of in-between E major and E minor (at the beginning at least; I think âIn Old England Townâ changes keys later).  Thereâs slightly more evidence for this connection than that with âCarry That Weight;â ELO covered âDay Tripperâ on Rockpalast in the early 1970s (either â73 or â74, I think).  Itâs on the British edition of the Live: The Early Years DVD.
Later in âIn Old England Town,â thereâs the line âAblution, evolutionâ (at least I think thatâs the line; I was having a lot of troubles transcribing the lyrics), which might have some connection to the Beatlesâ âRevolution.â Â âRevolutionâ doesnât contain the word ablution, but it does prominently use âevolutionâ and other â-tionâ words in the rhyme scheme.
Also in the lyrics is policeman, abbreviated as âpâliceman,â which is the same abbreviation as that in the Beatlesâ âI Am the Walrus.â Â There arenât many other ways to cut a syllable out of policeman, so that might just be coincidental, but - again - considering the whole âcontinue where âI Am the Walrusâ left off,â there might be something to that.
I think one of the lines is âTen thousand tons of waste dropped then ejected,â which has a slight connection to some lines in âKuiamaâ later on the album: âNow ten thousand miles / Is a long, long way.â
âRoll over Beethovenâ
I already mentioned this in a previous post, but ELO actually includes a quotation of the famous motif from Beethovenâs Symphony No. 5 in C minor (although half a step higher than Beethoven) near the beginning of their version of Chuck Berryâs âRoll over Beethoven.â
âKuiamaâ
While trying to transcribe âKuiama,â I noticed anaphora in the bridge - one of the few sections that I actually did complete a transcription of (although thereâs always the possibility that I misheard something). Â Four lines begin with âno more,â and a fifth has it very close to the beginning:
No more silver rain will hedge your ground And no more guns will sound No more life be drowned No more trenches where the soldiers lie No more people die Beneath that big black sky
âFrom the Sun to the Worldâ
The opening piano part in âFrom the Sun to the Worldâ bears some resemblance to Beethovenâs Moonlight Sonata.  At some point, Iâm going to write a separate post about it because 1) I need to write about it more in depth than here and 2) I need more time to look into some things and this post has been held back long enough.
Electric Light Orchestra - Kuiama
On Spotify, I have many playlists dedicated to specific bands. They contain all the singles and many albums from big bands such as this beautiful one called Electric Light Orchestra.
As a violinist and lover of Rock music, this band is the perfect fit for me. Blending symphonic overtones with rock melodies, this band was and is famous not just for the 11 albums it made in a span of about 15 years but also for how unique its sound is.
Around that time, much Rock music was full of just heavy rock guitar and loud banging drums full of repetition. The ELO band members were something different and have influenced much of today's musicians and artists.
This song, although full of sad lyrics about explaining war to a young orphan girl, is a beautiful journey not just with the beautiful voice but the orchestrated background music.
