After making our first prototype by combining two of our patterns to create more of a spherical shape, we made our second prototype as pictured. To create this we removed some of the pentagons so it fit together with less loose ends than the first prototype. For the photo we used a lightbulb just for illustrative purposes.
We are hoping to incorporate the arduino with a rotating motor so that the lamp can expand or ābloomā and contract in response either to the photosensor (controlled by natural light) or slider (controlled by the observer). We have also considered building a fixed position lamp with leds controlled by arduino with slider.
The fixed position lamp would help with solving certain design issues, such as the closure of the object but we believe that it would detract dramatically from the concept of the lamp. Because the form was dictated by the necessary folds and cutouts that would allow a single, flat sheet of bristol to fold into a three dimensional object, closing the object and restricting its ability to open and close would make it impossible to express that inherent quality of the system of folds.
