Everyone in Martinaise are miserable, but the mercs are the few that are truly beyond hope: they went through life and death situation did all the dirty works for Oranje to prosper, but Oranje have no place for menaces.
Maybe deep down they know that bravado machismo would vaporise the moment they face (be real to) themselves, sex, drugs and violence are an escape, a way to not feel, a mask for their weakness, an illusion of strength and control. Commit atrocities like it's a pissing contest.
As they sank down well into a place where light could never penetrate, the only people to have walked in their shoes and capable to understand their agony, to share the load with are themselves, and this companionship is the only warmth they can have, their safe space in the world.
Just how they hold onto each other so dearly makes them very yummy okay

Hey i have a question about your steven universe au. Do you think the RCM or Krenel would have gem destabilizers like the one Jasper had? I just think it makes sense, since they would leave any criminal unable to fight back almost immediately.
Yes! I believe that in the world of Disco Elysium, weapons like the Breaking Point in Steven Universe, as well as gem destabilizers, would have evolved to be more like ranged weapons than they are in the show. The RCM in my AU weaponizes and heavily controls fusion as a form of law enforcement for de-escalating a situation of multiple instigators for example, but in the case of the Mercenary Tribunal in the AU, the weapons used would have been primarily breaking point firearms-hybrids. In the Tribunal, Harry is shot with a breaking point, but it just misses his gem, which it has to hit (like a regular gun would have to hit a vital organ / the brain) to shatter a gem. Before he can poof, he warns Kim of de Paule behind him (for the AU, i interpret canon as being Kim trusting you and the relationship being maxed out like it can be at this point in the game), and when Kim shoots de Paule with the breaking point and shatters her in defense, then Harry poofs, whereupon Kim takes his gem and brings him to the Whirling in Rags to protect him. In the process, de Paule manages to crack Kim's gem nonfatally in the scuffle with the butt of her Breaking Point gun, which is what I would equate to his concussion in the game. These weapons are also what contributed to the Antecentennial revolution failing, where in Steven Universe their version of the revolution succeeded, but in the world of Disco Universe, the revolution did not, leaving the "Great Diamond Authority" as the general equivalent to the Moralist party in the world of Elysium. I'm still workshopping some ideas, but this is what I think happened for the world of the au and why these weapons are used.
