N220HA, one of Hawaiian Airlines' 18 Airbus A321neo aircraft, loads up at Portland International for a departure to Maui. ⁣ ⁣ The Airbus A321neos of Hawaiian are powered by the Pratt and Whitney PW1100G geared turbofan and are replacements for the Boeing 767-300s, offering far better operating economics, fuel economy and network flexibility than the older widebody aircraft, particularly in the pandemic recovery environment. The A321neo has been used predominantly on Hawaiian's routes between the islands and the US West Coast but sometimes supplements the Boeing 717 on some of the busier inter-island routes. ⁣ ⁣ The A321neos free up the A330s for other longer routes pending the arrival of the Boeing 787s in Hawaiian's fleet. ⁣ ⁣ The first A321neo for Hawaiian was delivered in 2017 and the eighteenth example delivered in 2020. This particular aircraft was delivered to the airline in May 2019. ⁣ ⁣ Hawaiian's A321neos are named for native Hawaiian plants and trees. N220HA is "Milo", a tree that has golden yellow flowers that bloom during the winter months. ⁣ ⁣ Milo wood was prized by early Hawaiians to make food bowls, platters, and dishes. The bark was also used as cordage, while the fruits produce a yellowish green dye, medicine, oil, and gum. Milo was considered a sacred tree and the use prohibited by commoners. The house of King Kamehameha I in Waikīkī was surrounded by milo.
