Seijin no Hi 成人の日 - coming of age day
Celebrated since 1948, it's a public holiday for those who turned/are about to turn 20 (the age of becoming adult was lowered to 18 in 2018, but the age span for Seijin no Hi remains the same) in the timespan 2. April of the previous year to 1. April of the current year.
Of course, hanamachi workers also celebrate. Sometimes the ladies are wearing family heirloom furisode, or furisode owned by their Okiya.
In 2025, the date for Seijin no Hi is 13. January. Here are some pictures I've collected over the years. Enjoy!
In order: Sanko 三子 from Sapporo, 1990's Kikuno 菊乃 from Nara, 1992 Ichiteru 市照 from Kyoto (Pontocho), 2017 Tsukushi つくし from Tokyo (Mukojima), 2019 (work Furisode) Ichina いち菜 from Tokyo (Kagurazaka), 2021 Kanofuji 佳乃藤 from Akita, ca. 2022 Chizuru 千鶴 from Osaka (Nanchi), 2023 Iroha いろ羽 from Akita, 2024 Maiko 舞衣子 from Niigata, 2024 (work Furisode) Kotono 古都乃 from Aizuwakamatsu, 2025 (work Furisode) Apart from Tsukushi, all pictures have originally been published on instagram. Source links for Ichiteru and Chizuru are dead, Kanofuji's and Kotono's pictures have been released as instagram stories and are therefore no longer available. Tsukushi's picture was from Futaba's Facebook I presume. But without Facebook account, browsing possibilities are limited.
March 16th, 2023: A new minarai is making her rounds in Miyagawa Cho! Kotono (小との) of Shigemori (しげ森) is the imōto of Kofuku (小ふく), also of Shigemori, and is currently the second active minarai in her district.
