A kotatsu is a Japanese piece of furniture that's used during the colder months. It's a table which has a heater underneath, and is covered with a blanket.
It makes me think of an AU where kotatsu are used in England, and where young Mycroft and Sherlock sit together in them during winters, with their legs touching under the table. Sherlock does scientific experiments at the table or plays with toy pirate ships while Mycroft reads good books and studies and thinks about his future plans. They also eat sweets and play board games and deduction games.
