Goa, India...
Celebrating the ganesh festival when in the village is an experience I find hard to describe since it's so normal to me. The normality of it all was most likely why I would take it for granted in my younger years, and sometimes I still do. But it's impact on the lives of my family, both close and extended, was always and will always be enormous.
The main reason is such that in my family extended family members are not allowed to keep Ganapati at home, only those who live in the village are allowed to keep it. Since my grandfather is one of the first in generations to work outside of the village I believe this was a pretty recent rule. But it was very effective in keeping our family connected. My mother's family follows the same practice, so every year I come visit my relatives in Konkan.
The daily bhajan where they go around to each house with a ganesh idol and sing bhajan is key in making sure all the neighbors are well acquainted with each other. The gauri puja helps empower the woman of the village. A good chunk of my vacation has been dedicated to visiting every relative we know to see and pay our respects to their ganesh.
Ganesh Chaturthi brings so many families together, and reminds many that there are people here to help them when they fall, that there is a safety net despite everything, family who will have your back no matter what an who you can turn to in times of trouble.
I can't speak for the people who's family isn't like mine, but I personally am grateful that I was fortunate enough to be born in such an accept king family, who even if they do gossip and complain about each other, will help each other no matter what and never turn their backs in times of need.
P.S. I just found out I have a gay uncle lol. Idk how he's related to me and I've never met him but I sure as hell know he exists since my aunts still talk about him. Their tones are so fondly exasperated despite the fact that they're homophobic that I'm like 99% sure no one has disowned him XD.
