I was at the emergency vet (80 year old Ninetales vs 24 year old me dropping a pound of dough ends exactly how you'd expect) (she's fine) and I saw a Komala there which has me wondering...how can surgery be done on a Komala? Can they be sedated? Additionally, do Pokemon with the abilities Insomnia and Vital Spirit react differently to anesthesia?

great question! sleep and compelte unconsciousness are two different states. a pokemon that's asleep can still react to stimuli and has a great deal of brain activity going on. this is how komala can survive despite being perpetually asleep, and it's also how moves like snore and sleep talk work. it also means that, while komala is already asleep and pokemon with certain abilities can't be forced to fall asleep, it's still possible to anesthetize them. komala in particular can be a bit scary since it's hard to tell when they're starting to "wake up," but they can still have surgery done on them.

what you can't do is sedate these pokemon. every vet i know hates to see a rockruff come in for a nail trim, because they tend to be fussy about it and there's a good chance you can't just load them up with some gabapentin ahead of time.
