Steve—devastating, dangerous, infuriating—smirks. He takes two steps forward before bending at the knee, lowering his ass to the edge of the mattress with confident precision, settling onto it as easily as he might have if this bed were not Bucky’s, but Steve’s. 

“Don’t worry about what I need yet, Buck. I’ll be here when you get out.”

Steve took the cup from the lip of the tub and filled it with water. As he did with Becca, he protected Charlie’s eyes and started washing the soap from his hair. “God, I loved him. The day he asked me if he could kiss me—” Steve huffed a sad laugh, his bottom lip between his teeth. He didn’t know why he was thinking about that. They’d both made their decision. “You couldn’t have a better papa, Charlie.”

When his hair was clean, he set the cup to the side, turned to grab the remaining dinosaur towel, and froze. Bucky was standing in the doorway, his expression a mixture of regret, ecstatic joy, and excruciating sadness.

He’s a father. He’s a father. And he told himself he was gonna be a better one than his own. That’s not hard, but he wants to be better than better. Peter deserves the best.

“Right, monkey?” Tony asks, brushing his fingers through Peter’s mess of hair. “Right crazy pants? The best. You deserve the best.” Peter looks up again, still so joyful and happy, so much trust in his eyes. He exclaims, breathing fast, and reaches up, grasping at Tony’s chin.
