I've fallen into the slightly strange habit of knitting back backwards (purling with right side facing, or whatever you like to call it) instead of turning the work and purling, when knitting flat. I started doing it for heel flaps on socks, but now I do it all the time.
For me, it's not nearly as fast as doing knit stitches, but with practice it's now about the same as "regular" purling. I like it better because I have more control over the stitches, also not having to turn the work and all that.
I feel like I used to be better at purling but have been spoiled by knitting stockinette in the round all the time :P
