A loved one (also knitter) sent me a beautiful article by Patricia Adamopoulou.Her interesting theory is the following .... The average rhythm of the movements made by the knitter is about sixty per minute.Like heartbeats, more or less.So it is possible that the attraction of knitting is exactly due to what Desmond Morris points out in his book "The Naked Monkey": human records indelibly in his life the rhythmic memory from the heartbeats .  Perhaps during  its existence inside the body of the mother, the growing embryo becomes fixated ('imprinted') on the sound of the heart beat. If this is so, then the re-discovery of this familiar sound after birth might have a calming effect on the infant, especially as it has just been thrust into a strange and frighteningly new world outside. If this is so then the mother, either instinctively or by an unconscious series of trials and errors, would soon arrive at the discovery that her baby is more at peace if held on the left against her heart, than on the right.Into adult life the phenomenon seems to stay with us. We rock with anguish. I took my knitting for a walk and actually managed to find some quiet greenery in the park. . There's been a lot of talk about accessibility while I've been away (by 'away' I do mean lurking), and while the fact that we *have* to talk about it isn't great, the fact that the conversation is happening seems like a good one. . For now, I have removed the Ravelry link from my profile so that no one can click it and do themselves any harm. I'm looking into the best places to host my patterns elsewhere, so that they are still available to folks who are in danger from using Ravelry. I can do this relatively easily because I have, like, 4 patterns, but my sympathies for designers whose entire careers have pretty much been dumped due to inaccessibility. . As for the current financial discussion, I've only been witness to this second hand so I don't want to accidentally strawman anyone. For the record I don't think I've ever used the recommended yarn for a pattern for various reasons, and yarn subbing is a skill I am still not entirely competent at but there are things I can do to help. As a knitter, gauge swatches are helpful, as is thinking about what qualities the garment requires from the yarn, but none of these are super easy to grasp as a newbie. . That is why, as I designer, I always try to say 'you should use a yarn that has these qualities, and here is the yarn I used in the photos.' It doesn't fix everything, but hopefully it helps. .
