im very curious how the clan cats would react to some of the more athletic cat breeds. would they be shocked that a kittypet could actually keep up, in some aspects?
i am specifically thinking like, abyssinian, bengal, etc
I believe we answered this somewhere, but I can't find it, so I'll say it here: I think the Clans would be impressed by an athletic kittypet, but they're still "inherently lower" because of where they live. Though if that cat wanted to put their skills to use as a warrior, we'd be telling a different story.
Hal (classic tabby) and Russetfur (cinnamon)
Featherstorm (tortoiseshell tabby)
Could a loner or kittypet be invited into a clan and then denied entry because they didn't want to take a clan name?
It depends on the Clan culture and leader's personality at the time. More often than not, a Clan will accept a newcomer not wanting to give up their name, though with great reluctance and occasional verbal pushes to take on a warrior's title regardless. Sometimes the cat is given the choice to leave or accept their new culture's rules, and if they refuse a rename, they are escorted out of the territory with some polite force.
The thing is, Clan cats understand the personal importance of a name - it's the most significant aspect of the average warrior's life. There are, at minimum, two ceremonies just for naming that every single cat will go through, and at max, you may have five (kit-to-apprentice, apprentice-to-warrior, injury rename, leadership, and retirement, thus losing leadership). It's a big deal, basically.
So, though they still believe their culture is The Best Culture And Everyone Should Live By It Completely If They Join Us, a good three-quarters of Clan cats will get it if a newcomer's hesitant. They may not agree, but they get it. They'd want to keep their names too, no matter where they end up. Sure, your name is silly to them, but it's your name, you know? It's a hard place to be in! That warrants sympathy, most think, and thus patience. Maybe you'll change your mind later, when you're more comfortable. Until then, you'll be called your original name, and we'll only occasionally suggest you comply with the Clan's wishes. That's fair, they think.

Kinda curious, but I got to wondering - why hasn’t Firestar rejected using the word “kittypet” and stuck to “housecat” instead? Since kittypet is a very deliberately scornful term, it always struck me as odd that he willingly added it to his lexicon. Him consciously using “housecat” could’ve been yet another example of his compassion-fueled defiance to the Clans’ xenophobic attitudes. How does Firestar feel about the word in general?
"Kittypet" as a term is more neutral lingo than simply an insult. It's a casual reference to an outsider, the same way "loner" and "rogue" are, that the Clans specifically use within their culture - you can see the difference in "he's a loner (Clan)" vs "he's a stray (outsider)". You can definitely utilize it as an insult, if you're angry enough. However, most of the time, it's just a phrase that is localized entirely within the Clans - their way of tossing out a quick note of where a cat comes from or lives. Firestar caught onto it and started using it as part of his melding into the Clans, and if he thought it was insulting, he would be sure to call himself and others like him "housecat". He's just heard it as a consistently neutral term, and only lobbed as an insult when someone's angry about something more than just where he came from, so he doesn't take it personally.
Has any cat ever tried to come back after being sent to the houses?
One or two might have. Certainly any cat who was left in the Houses to be saved from a drastic injury would want to return after being healed. Those cats, though, weren't expected to stay there forever, stars willing and humans be kind. They should return if they're able to.
The ones who were sent for other reasons - debilitating physical or mental disorders in specific - tend to stay for good. Maybe they could try visiting the border if they're allowed outside by their humans, just to say hi to old Clanmates (assuming they're from ThunderClan, or hoping that ThunderClan will send a message for them). But if you're in such a desperate position that living with humans is your only way to lead a comfortable life, and you don't have to work for food, and your only concern is your barely-lingering Clan pride... well, you can start to see the benefits of kittypethood. Your Clanmates did suggest you stay here, for your own good, as agreed by all parties. And, well, maybe it's not horrible to be touched by gentle human hands, especially when they give you treats. You guess you can stay a little longer, just to be reaaally sure you should be here. The Clan's fine. They know you're here. They can say hi whenever they want.
Now, the real question: which spot in the house do you want to take a nap in right now? There's so many good spots to lounge in the sun, after all.
