————————
Kit Tanthalos had always been stubborn, proud, and fiercely independent. Apologizing wasn’t exactly her forte. So when you’d convinced her to keep your relationship a secret to protect your position as a kitchen maid, Kit had agreed, albeit begrudgingly. She hated sneaking around, but she’d do it for you—because, as much as she’d never admit it out loud, she’d do just about anything for you.
But after last night’s argument, Kit couldn’t help but feel uneasy. It wasn’t the kind of fight that usually rattled her, but the tension in your voice as you walked away had lingered in her mind. She’d told herself you just needed space and that things would be fine.
The next morning, Kit made her way to the kitchens as she sometimes did, hoping to see you. It was her way of showing she cared, even if she wasn’t great at saying it. But when she arrived, you weren’t there.
“Where’s she?” Kit asked one of the other maids, as she motioned towards your usual place in the kitchen, trying to sound casual despite the sudden tightness in her chest.
The maid shrugged. “Haven’t seen her all day.”
Kit’s heart sank. Panic bloomed in her chest, and the guilt from last night’s argument began to fester. Had you left? Had she pushed you too far?
Kit spent the entire day searching for you, ignoring her usual duties and the concerned questions from those around her. She checked the borders of the estate, the quiet corners of the castle, and even the edge of the woods where you sometimes went to clear your head. Each place she looked, the absence of you felt heavier.
By the time midnight rolled around, Kit was exhausted—physically and emotionally. She returned to the castle, her steps dragging as she made her way to the kitchens for a glass of water.
The sight of you, standing at the sink and cleaning up, stopped her in her tracks. Relief hit her like a tidal wave, and she felt her knees nearly give out.
“…you’re here,” Kit said, her voice cracking.
You turned, startled by the sudden presence. “Kit? What are you doing here so late?”
Instead of answering, Kit crossed the room in a few quick strides and wrapped her arms around you. The force of her hug made you drop the rag you were holding, but you didn’t care.
“Kit, what’s wrong?” you asked, your voice muffled against her shoulder.
“I’m sorry,” Kit whispered, her tone uncharacteristically soft and urgent. “I’m so sorry about last night. I shouldn’t have said those things, and I thought—I thought you’d left. I looked everywhere for you.”
You pulled back just enough to see her face. The raw emotion in her eyes startled you. Kit was never this open, not unless she truly felt shaken.
“I didn’t leave,” you said gently, reaching up to cup her cheek. “I just… wasn’t feeling well this morning. I stayed in bed until I could get up.”
Kit blinked, her brows knitting together. “You were sick? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t think it was that bad,” you admitted. “And I didn’t want to bother anyone.”
Kit’s jaw tightened, her worry and frustration evident. “You’re never a bother to me.”
Your heart softened at her words. You gave her a small smile and brushed a strand of hair out of her face. “I’m fine now, Kit. Really.”
Kit didn’t look convinced, but she stayed by your side as you finished cleaning. She leaned against the counter, her eyes never straying far from you.
When you were done, she took your hand and led you out of the kitchen. “You’re not staying up late again,” she said firmly.
You chuckled softly, squeezing her hand. “Yes, ma’am.”
Her lips twitched into a faint smile, but the worry in her eyes lingered. That night, Kit didn’t let go of you once. As the two of you lay in bed, her arms around you, she whispered again, “I’m sorry.”
You kissed her temple and rested your head on her chest. “I know. And I love you, stubbornness and all.”
Kit smiled, the tension in her shoulders finally easing. For you, she could learn to let her guard down, one quiet moment at a time.
