Kishimoto’s other manga that he worked on post Naruto, called Samurai 8, explores the idea of non-binary gender.
Interesting, given some of the Naruto characters like Haku, Orochimaru, etc.

Sigh. The tragedy of naruto's under-developed romance isn't that Kishiomoto is a bad writer. It's that he's great enough at writing stuff that compels him (surprisingly complex and developed (male) characters and dynamics) but half asses stuff as soon as he's bored (like with romance). Like if he was just a bad writer we wouldn't care or like the characters so much. it's the fact that he's SUCH a good writer in some regards that make his failures that much more frustrating.
sometimes you see a take and just. shake your head a little. yes kishimoto is a bad writer but NOT in that way yes kishimoto is a good writer but NOT in THAT way. whatever.
awww
NARUTO BODY HORROR IS PEAK. HILLS I WILL DIE ON FOREVER. I would read the SHIT out of a horror shojo if Kishimoto wrote it, because it would be all of his best and worst qualities as a writer in a fucking cage match every chapter. God.

no but truly ive learned that i'll never fully understand kishimoto's authorial intent in naruto simply because i don't have the time to familiarize myself with the super rich cultural tapestry he's referencing and pulling from!! #myhubris #sorrytobuddhism
Hiya! ♥️ I saw your very popular post about Naruto from here: https://www.tumblr.com/1rakus/707291669527248896?source=share
and as you mentioned the rising sun flag behind the sage of six paths, I was wondering, could Kishimoto's intent be to depict the Vairocana Buddha?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vairocana
I'm not too well versed in all aspects of the Buddhist texts and history even though I'm a practising Buddhist, but I believe Vairocana Buddha is one of the first incantation of The Buddha, and the most recent emanation body of The Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, shares a lot of similarities to Nagato. Both Siddhartha Gautama and Nagato were ascetics, they were all skin and bones before Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment under the bodhi tree after a small act of kindness, the same way Nagato achieved enlightenment inside Konan's paper tree disguise after Naruto's small act of kindness and decided to leave his mortal body.
Ranting here 😅, I also highly believe Obito Uchiha is suppose to represent a corrupted version of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva. Obito believed the Shinobi world is true hell, Kṣitigarbha refuses to leave hell until all hells are emptied, the same way Obito wanted everyone to escape from the pain of the Shinobi world.
Haha, maybe I'm completely wrong, 😅 I did have a soft spot for Naruto despite it's flaws and I'm also used to seeing religious symbols being corrupted by hate groups. The Buddhist swastika drawn on Neji's forehead unfortunately became associated with the Nazi party and the anime had to change it to a cross. The Capirote used by the Catholic church in Spain became associated with the KKK.
Thank you for listening to my rant haha ♥️♥️♥️♥️
helloooo oh my goodness thank you for sending this!! i think that could absolutely be what he intended (and frankly would be more interesting and less concerning than the alternative). what a gorgeous bit of symbolism and cultural context i was completely missing!!
the tradgedy of naruto in general is that kishimoto is a good writer but not a great one. He's really good at writing the stuff he cares about and shit at writing the stuff people make him put in his work for profit and mass appeal.
