I've been thinking about something @kaminoshisha pointed out: that Konan is never shown crying in canon, and I don't think it's an oversight. Kishimoto is very intentional about who cries, when, and why. It's one of his most consistent tools.

The Senju clan: Butsuma's kids aren't allowed to cry in front of him, so they don't -> When Itama cries, it's treated as weakness -> Hashirama is only allowed to cry when he's alone AND Madara is the only person in the entire manga who lets him cry without judgement (Tobirama screams at him at the Kage meeting). The contrast is deliberate: it's how Kishimoto writes their bond vs Hashirama's upbringing.

So when Konan (or other character) never cries, I don't think it's because Kishimoto "forgot." He's making a point. People joke about Kishimoto being "lazy" or "chaotic" but he has some extremely intentional emotional moments. Some of his best character work is VERY SUBTLE and that's why it gets overlooked, because fandom assumes he's not thinking that deeply, and they chalk it down to him being lazy. But he does, especially when it comes to who gets to cry and who doesn't. That's why it's important to read it in the context of the whole manga. Not everything is being told explicitly.

Kishimoto’s other manga that he worked on post Naruto, called Samurai 8, explores the idea of non-binary gender.

Sigh. The tragedy of naruto's under-developed romance isn't that Kishiomoto is a bad writer. It's that he's great enough at writing stuff that compels him (surprisingly complex and developed (male) characters and dynamics) but half asses stuff as soon as he's bored (like with romance). Like if he was just a bad writer we wouldn't care or like the characters so much. it's the fact that he's SUCH a good writer in some regards that make his failures that much more frustrating.
